ROSS family in Salthill 1852
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 00:01 UTC (UK) »

My gt grandfather's brother Andrew ROSS from Milntown of New Tarbat in Ross-shire, Scotland  was a Union Bank chief clerk and probably farmed like the rest of the family.

He may have married twice but one name is Marianne GERRARD and they had a daughter  Marianne Jane ROSS who was born in SALTHILL, Galway about 1852 from her Australian marriage certificate -at Benella in 1882 to John KINGSTON also born  in Ireland at Rosscarberry , Cork about 1840.

Andrews second daughter Elsie Montgomery ROSS was born in Tipperary about 1855 and her mother's name was Elizabeth Fuller as near as we can read her surname.

Since Andrew died young  (35) back in Scotland in 1860 I assume he did not live in Galway very long. Anyone got access to the 1851 census perhaps - any information about this family appreciated.

Hello Fransmoi,

Andrew Ross's name does not appear in Griffith's Valuation of Galway (this shows heads of household only)
which took place in the county in 1855 so either he was not a head of household or he had already left Galway.

All the Best, Chris

Thanks for that.Chris - Have just found your reply !

I reckon Marianne's mother died / walked away for Andrew had another daughter in Tipperary in 1855 to a lady named Elizabeth but so far nobody can decypher her surname on her daughter's marriage certificate.

(I have passed it into the Common Room for discussion.)

Andrew missed the 1861 census but inconveniently dying the year before in Scotland ! But Marianne is there living with his elderly parents and aunt in Ross-shire..

Little wonder she went with Andrew's sister to Australia which makes me think she'd been orphaned.

Thanks again,
fransmoi.
