I am trying to find out about a Nicholas Cooper Wynne (mother's grandfather) born 18/11/1877 in Ireland and died in 1956 in South Africa. The birth date was aquired from the IGI and the death date my mother gave me first hand. She knew his age when he died so we do know that the year he was born in is correct. The IGI also lists his parents as Thomas Wynne and Susanna Wynne Fox (I do find the mother's name perplexing as I am not sure if the Wynne is a second name or part of the surname.) I know that he is descended of the Wynnes of Hazelwood in county Sligo. Thanks to some help from a woman in Ireland I have quite a bit of info on the Wynnes of Hazelwood, but only the "important" son's lives were covered and not the other branches. As a result of this I have huge gaps.
Nicholas Cooper Wynne married an Irish woman in Ireland in the late 1800's and we know they had two sons - Eric and the other known as Bull, but we are not sure if this was his given name or a nickname - I am assuming the latter. Unfortunately we have no dates. Either she then died or they separated and he came out to South Africa to fight with the Boers against the British in the Anglo-Boer War. He married a South African woman - we think an Erasmus and had two sons. The elder - Owen Edgar Wynne was born in 1919 in Ireland and the younger - Eamon Anthony born 1921, we think in South Africa.
I have no other information. I have been to some of the links posted on this site for Sligo, but am having no luck. It's a total shot in the dark, but does anyone have any information at all regarding the Irish information. Any info at all will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Shannon
Nicholas Cooper Wynne was my paternal grandfather, and he did indeed marry an Erasmus. The sons names were Walter and Eric, but my father - Eamon Anthony, told us that they were his mother's children by a Mr Yeld?
I have also recently been trying to find out about my Grandfather, but with no real success. Owen Edgar and his entire family except his adopted daughter Ann, were drowned in a yachting accident.
Eamon, known as Chucks, is still alive and living in Rondebosch in Cape Town.
My brother, Gavin Cooper Wynne and I both live in Port Elizabeth.
Please let me know if you have any more information at all about this branch of the family.
Janet

HI,
I was looking at some fascinating information on the Wynne family earlier today on:
www.landedestates.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=51
If you scroll down the page to Archival Sources, you'll read that Trinity College holds some 19th and 20th century family correspondence. There may be some useful information which might provide assistance to you.
Cheers

Thanks to everyone for the help. Is there anyone out there who could possible help me find the connection betweent the Coopers of Markree Castle in Collooney, Co. Sligo, Ireland and the Wynnes. Cooper was taken on as a second name so I am assuming that a male Wynne married a female Cooper. I have looked up Markree Castle on the internet and got the early Coopers, but there my trail runs cold.
Any help would be appreciated. regards, Shannon
