I am searching for a rellie who was born in New York near Earsdon and Shiremoor in 1837 (inconveniently just too early for certificates - how inconsiderate!) and as many of the churches in the area are post the formation of Newcastle as a separate diocese (1882), I wondered if anyone had any idea which parish it would have been in at the time?
I know from research about other places that exotic place names in the NE (Quebec, Philadelphia etc) did not originate from the area but were used because when founded, folk liked the name, or it was topical for some reason. I assume this applies to New York also.
Any tips gratefully received. Am hunting Jane Robertson, b 1837.
Thanks Nick

from a look through genuki, and based on what is given for Shiremoor, i would think it would be Tynemouth Parish Church - North Shields, Christ Church.

Nick,
Keith is right, it comes under Tynemouth parish. If you go onto the Genuki page for Tynemouth and look under Church Records, you'll find that the Tynemouth marriage indexes for 1607 - 1679 and 1813 - 1821 are available online courtesy of George Bell's Durham and Northumberland Indexes.
If you want to know which parish a specific place is in, a good source is Genuki's 'Places in Northumberland' at:-
http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Gazetteer/index.html
Cheers,
Kath

Nick,
Are you sure of Jane's exact birth year? Both the IGI and the BVRI record the baptism of a Jane Robertson at Tynemouth , Christ Church, on 10 June 1836, parents George Robertson and Elizabeth.

Since posting this request, I have stumbled across a distant cousin who is in possession of a family bible belonging to Jane's grandmother. I have yet to discover the details, but fully hope to find out what I am looking for. It is only fair to posters on this thread that I share with you what I find and that is what I propose to do. If nothing else, it will be interesting to compare and contrast IGI records with family records.
Clearly I am delighted at this turn of events - it is the first family bible that has been uncovered relating to any of my ancestors.

Shiremoor is Tynemouth, but it might be worth checking Earsdon too
