Hi Anne.

As an 'old hat' at looking around cemeteries for gravestones I may be able to help.  I do know that the councils now administer the graveyards and so are likely to keep a record of where the graves is.  There is also the possibility that your relative was cremated and therefore, obviously, you would find no gravestone.

I know from my research for my grandmother's grave - about 50 miles away from where I expected it to be - that the council had a grave space reference number.  I know that  1991 is quite modern and the books may still be in council ownership.  However, the staff were very helpful to me.  I've become a 'dab hand' at working out how to find the graves from the reference number the council gave me!

As an aside I trawlled through the entries for the cemetery at Lonbenton (from the books kept at North Shields library) and found a name that could not possibly be any other than a relative.  When I cross referenced it with a database from the Scottish government site I found that this man was indeed a great uncle.

I don't know the Ulgham area very well but suspect it could be under the care of Castle Morpeth or Wansbeck Council so you could try them first.  I think you will find their number in the phone book under cemeteries and registrars.

Hope this has been of help.

Hi Anne,

I thought I would mention that I have looked at the NBI and cannot find a Frances Scott in Ulgham Cemetary  or anywhere Northumberland listed for 1991.

Kind Regards,

Frances Smiley

Hi again Anne

I'm sorry you didn't get much luck with your searches.  I still think contacting the local council that administer the graveyard is an option you cannot lose out with.  What is the NBI - Northumberland Burial Index?

It is sad but true that the council have a legal right to use a gravespace that has not been purchased after a 14 year period ( I know this because this is what happened to my grandmother Eliza who died in 1928 when The Depression was beginning and little money was spare for burials.  It is so very sad as there is no marked area to place flowers for her).  If your friend looked this year it is 14 years since 1991.

I hope this has been of use.

Yours J.A.
