I am trying to find a Gilbert Lane born 1846 who seems unsure where he was born.varies between Dorset&Somerset

By 1865 he is married to a Mary Anne Cole In Blandord,occupation gardener

You could try ordering his marriage certificate, this would give the name of his father, and therefore easier to track down.

The only Gilbert Lane I can find on the 1861 census was born in Reading, Berks.

Marriage details are as follows:

Sep qtr 1866 - Gilbert Lane & Mary Cole, Blandford Vol 5a Page 403.
