James Rutterford, convicted poacher, also bludgeoned a gamekeeper, John Hight, to death. Tried but repreived in unusual circumstances in March 1870. The killing took place near to Eriswell.
Is there someone out there who can tell me when, how and where said James Rutterford actually did die?

I've found this posted on the web, it might help.
http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/bbals_17.htm
do you know who James' parent's were? I'm descended from the Rutterfords of Eriswell, so I suspect there is a connection and wonder where it is.
regards,
Katrina

Hi Roly,
Thank you for that.
I've just been looking through some only 19th century newspapers and it seems that James was "committed to penal servitude for life" at the time it says we was 27, so I think this could be the reference for his death (going by his age):
Deaths Jun 1893: Rutterford James 51 Mildenhall 4a 405.
The old newspapers also say he was known locally by the name Rutter. They are very interesting
regards,
Katrina

Katrina,
Checked my nots - nothing about his family...I was, in fairness, concentrating on the murder only. Quick check via Family Search revealed nothing; but I haven't done any prolonged delving. Neither do I have credits with Ancestry, though I got a James Rutterford, born around 1843-4. You might be able to go from here.
Sorry that I can't help further - but, if you do have success, please let me know. It'd be intersting to 'complete' the picture.

Suffolk Sue - the Local History Recorder for the parish of Eriswell has much more to say about neighbouring Lakenheath in her annual report than what has been happening in nearby Eriswell - so I think you have probably found him, the two places being so close together
