Where oh where did he go LDS lists James McMurray, son of John McMurray and Isabella Shaw, as having been born in Borgue on 21 Feb 1826. I have not been able to find James on Scotlandspeople (strange that LDS have this OPR record but not SP?). I have tried searching all James McMurray/McMurries born in 1826 in Kirkcudbrightshire, give or take two years, again without success. No death registration either. Census records from 1851 on have shown the rest of the family, but no James. Does anyone have any ideas, short of suggesting that he died young, or visiting the Archives? I am in the USA Is anyone else researching McMurray from Anwoth & Girthon/McClune from Dunrod/Shaw/McFegan?
Thank you!

Thank you Northerngirl! I have in fact seen the data base you referred me to, but appreciate your input. I have come acoss your Shaws many times, and have wondered whether my Isabella was closely related, or only distantly? I haven't done much work on the Shaws, simply because the McMurrays have kept me busy for four years now! That and the fact that Isabella's parents are recorded as having been Nathan Shaw and Isabella Mclean. No Nathan's anywhere except for a Nathan McMurray, bell hanger in Gatehouse of Fleet, who seems to have come from Stranraer and not apparently directly related. But who knows? - our earliest known McMurrie (another James) was in Anwoth late 1700's ....along with the Shaws. Have you seen the Isabella Shaw (from Balmaclellan) Will on SP? Its the right area for your Shaws .... and I'll keep an eye open for them now that I know that you are looking. I have also just discovered, with help from Callywoods (who is a distant cousin from GH of Fleet), that James McMurray appears in the 1841 census in Tongland, age 15! So he didn't die young ....well, it appears not before 1841. Do you know how I can send you my email address without sharing it with the world?! Megan

Hi - I am new to Roots Chat. I am researching the McMurray line and found a connection to Shaw. My research centers around William McMurray, B. 1842 in Ireland to John and Catherine also of Ireland. He had a brother James, sister, Elizabeth, brother Thomas. The family emigarted to London in aprox 1845. William's sibs were born in Lancashire and St. Pancras London. In the 1901 England Census William McMurray and his wife Jane have a grandaughter living with them named "Norah Shaw".
any of this ring a bell?
thanks~ Cathie Joy

thanks N. Girl. well i think my mystery is solved but does not help me in respects to your Murray/ Shaw connection. Mine is a much later connection and probably of unrelated.
1891 Census - RG12/336 Folio 54 Page 39
My William and Jane E. A. McMurray (maiden name Johnson) - had a daughter Jane (sister to my Great geat grandfather William Mc Murray) who's first marriage was to a Frederick Shaw - hence the grand Daughtetr Norah who lived with William and Jane in the 1901 census.
My William did have a brother James born after him - aprox 1850( don't have my notes in front of me) and apparently he emigrated to the states and maybe owned a bar?
william Mc Murray's parents were John (born 1810)and Catherine Mc Murray both of Ireland but I do not know what town they were from. rumors aroung Antrim and Mayo - quite a difference. More family rumors- somewhere back there they are supposed to be mcMurrays of Scotland but i can not even pin them down in Ireland yet!
Great site! Glad to be here! Hope to find my McMurrays

Ooops, been sleeping and missed all the chat on my topic! Hi J.A. - hope you are keeping well and finding lots of good stuff? Cathie Joy, sorry for the delayed response. It doesn't appear that my Shaws were in Ireland around the same time as yours ....they were in Kirkmabreck in the late 1700's. Sorry I can't help
Megan
