I wish the ancestors had been literate
« on: Friday 07 October 05 19:20 UTC (UK) »

My name ORSLER originates from around Brundish/Bedfield area and obviously my ancestors didn't know how to either read or write their Surname.
Consequently there are a variety of spellings that have been entered in births/marriages/deaths.  The census records are even more of a nightmare.  Not only did the enumerator not have a clue on the spelling, many subsequent  transcriptions bear little or no resemblance to the name.
I think that I have found most of the Orsler/Ostler/Osler etc. names that are part of my family.  Now I have come across a new spelling of OASTLER.  I have definitely tied this group of families to my own.  I wonder when and how this particular varient emerged.
I have a
Jeremiah son of Elizabeth Ostler base born 20th April 1788
He and most of his descendants became OASTLER.
I would be grateful if there are any references to OASTLER prior to 1861 to see maybe when the name change occured.
Thanks
Brenda

This does not do a lot for you but the name Oastler appears to have a strong connection with Scotland and the norh of England, for example the two website addresses below originated on Rootschat back in the late 1990s.

It may be another avenue of research unless the family lineage is knowingly embedded in Suffolk to the exclusion of other parts of the country.

Thanks for that.
I'm pretty sure that the ancestors are from Suffolk as my furthest back details are:
Bedfield where the family seems to derive from a series of illegitimate children born to Elizabeth from 1788 onwards.
Most of the children's names were slightly differently spelt but most went on to become either Orsler or Ostler.
Now the OASTLER's have appeared as one of the illigitimate children of Elizabeth Orsler 1756
Brenda
Most of the Oastler's are from around Tannington/Dennington area

I can empathise with you over the spelling variations.

On my father's side there is a Goddard family, within the same family lineage it was variously recorded over a fifty year period as: Garrod - Gorred - Gorrod - Goddard.

And they were also in Suffolk!
