DOWELL of Seend
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 05:18 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find my grandmother (Rachel Kathleen Gillen, born place unknown 1875) on the 1901 census, but she appears to be missing from it.
I know she was brought up by the Dowell family of Kingston upon Thames (1881 & 1891 census)and became an evangelist, but then have no trace until she married my grandfather in 1905.

I have recently found that a daughter of the same Dowell family (Sarah Jane born c1865) was also an evangelist and was living in Seend in 1901.  If anyone can find that Sarah Jane Dowell on the 1901 for me, could you have a look for another evangelist as a companion, whose details have a similarity to my Rachel's, for I now wonder if her entry may have been mistranscribed in the indexes?

Thanks Kris
It was both a thought and a chance worth taking.

Sarah Jane could have been known as Jane since very young.  If she did not have anything to do with giving details to the enumerator at the census . . . . .

Thanks Chas
Kris already found Sarah in 1901 (who as you quite correctly pointed out also appeared in doccuments under the name of Jane) but no one with a name anything like my grandmother's was with her.  I can only assume that in that particular year gran was either out of the country or for some reason the enumerator missed her.

I have her later in 1911, for by then she was married to my grandfather Ernest Henry Grant from Salisbury.  Although she knew her birthday in later life,  the family she lived with always put 'Not Known' against her place of birth on the 1881 & 1891 censuses.  I therefore wondered if she eventually discovered she was originally an illegitimate orphan born in the Kingston on Thames Workhouse?
