THE MAORI CRICHTON
« on: Thursday 19 August 04 12:09 BST (UK) »

Huh HI MY NAME IS HINEMAKO BUT AFFECTIONATLY KNOWN AS "THE MAORI CRICHTON" OR CREIGHTON AS WE SPELL IT.
AS YOU MAY GATHER IM PART SCOTISH AND PART NZ NATIVE MAORI, AS SUCH IM BOUND BY MY TUPUNA (ANSESTORS) IT IS VITAL IN MY CULTURE TO KNOW WHERE WE COME FROM AND FROM WHOM WE DECEND FOR INSTANCE ON MY MAORI SIDE I CAN GO BACK 12 GENERTATIONS THROUGH 8 DIFERENT CHEIFS, KNOWING ALL THIS, IT HAS BROUGHT ME HERE TO THIS FORUM TO FIND OUT FROM WHOM I DESCEND, FOR REASONS BEING THAT I FEEL A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF MYSELF HAS BEEN LOST THRU THE GENERATIONS OF MY LINE, UNFORTUNATLY MY SCOTISH ANCESTORS DID NOT PASS THIS INFO DOWN LIKE THOSE ON MY MAORI SIDE DID THRU ORAL HISTORY AND STORY TELLING.
OK MY GREAT GRAND MOTHER (AS I JUST RECENTLY FOUND OUT THRU THE DEATH OF MY GRANDFATHER) WAS FULL BLOODED SCOTISH A CREIGHTON/CRICHTON ELSIE WAS HER NAME, SHE WAS 2ND GENERATION SCOTISH BORN IN NZ HER FATHER WAS GEORGE OR JIM CREIGHTON AND AS FAR AS I KNOW HIS FATHER WAS THE JAMES CRICHTON THAT MIGRATED TO NZ IN THE LATE 1700S EARLY 1800S AROUND THE TIME OF TRADING BETWEEN MAORI AND BRITSH, MY G-GRAND MOTHER WAS BORN JUST BEFORE THE TREATY OF WAITANGI WAS DRAWN UP IN 1840 SO SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN HER 90'S WHEN SHE DEID IN 1981, THIS IS AS FAR AS I AM ABLE TO GO....
THE KEY HERE I FEEL IS MY GGG-GRANDDAD JAMES, CAN ANYONE VERIFY HIS LINE OG DESCENT IN WOULD BE A GREAT HELP FOR ME AND ESPECIALLY MY FATHER BEING ONE OF HER LAST LINES LEFT ALIVE Cry
THANK YOU

Hello Hinemako,

and welcome to RootsChat.   Grin  We are glad that you have found us and there are lots of friendly people here who would be happy to help you with your Tupana.

First of all I want to say how lucky you are in that your Maori culture recognises the importance of knowing where you come from.  There are many family historians who would give their right arm to be able to trace their family through 12 generations.

I have moved you message to the beginners forum which should be useful to you,  take a look,  particularly at the link below,  which is tips for beginners:

http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3996.0

There is also an Emigrants Board:

http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=136.0

where specialists in this area will be able to give guidance.

Take time to get your bearings,  and we look forward to hearing from you again,
