Grays - Monaghan-brick wall!!
« on: Tuesday 11 October 05 04:25 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for info on the gray line.  I was given some info a couple of years ago.  My gran was born in Lismacreark co. Mon.

Samuel Gray m. Agnes McDowell  Apr 23 1875
-Margaret Jane Mar 17 1877
William Dec 12 1878
Hannah ?   ?? 1880
David June 4 1885
Aggie Jan 1 1887
Mary Feb 2 1888
Samuel Aug 3 1890
Sarah Letitia -my gran -Aug 7 1892
Robert James Aug 3 1894
Joseph Jan 1 1900

The info I was given before Sam & Agnes is names only...no dates.

Sarah Letitia met James Yeates who we believe was born in the Belfast area.  My mother, Mary Irene was born in Scarva, co. Down in Aug 1924.  We believe her older brother Thomas was also born in Ireland.  By 1930 they had moved to Canada...

The Yeates side is even harder to work on...

Anyone know these Grays Huh

Saintfield is only a few miles south of Belfast and Yeates is not a very common name so this might be your Yeates family. Here is a link to Ros Davies site whereyou can read more of the area and see some pictures including the churches.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/PHOTOSwords/SaintfieldAll.htm

Ros also has extensive listings of names with info and you will find Yeates  here.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/YZ.htm

Good luck with your Gray searching and I hope this info on Yeates is of some help.

Hi,  I'm afraid I can not give any real positive assistance but one of my ancestors from County Monaghan did marry a ? GRAY.   My LEMON family from Killycronaghan, County Monaghan had a daughter born 1875 cc - (I don't even know her christian name) but she married a Mr. GRAY.   I will be watching this spot to see if you make progress as it is possible that we may connect.   Good luck.  Elizabeth

Hi elizabeth,

My understanding from a minister who did a lot of research for his Gray line, was that the Grays in our family were the Grays of the Hollow....in the same town were the Grays of the Hill....  the hollow group were primarily workers/farmers..the Hill, had money

will keep you in mind.....

I have connected with someone on the Yeates side so my attention has been there...

Thank you Cheryl, I will keep an eye on your progress.   I emigrated from Ireland some 34 years ago and it was a very elderly Aunt (still alive) who gave me the information quite recently about her Aunt having been married to a GRAY.   I may be able to find out which GRAY family he came from and if so I will get in touch with you again.   In the meantime I wish you the best of luck with your research.   Kind regards, Elizabeth

Hi, just came upon your post.  I am Bertie Gray of Lismacreark, son of Robert James Gray (brother of your grandmother).  Your grandmother visited our home in the 1950's.  If you read this send your details to our postal address - still Lismacreark, Dunraymond, Co. Monaghan, Ireland! and I would be more than happy to reply and help as much as I can.

Hello Bertie,  I do not know for sure whether I actually relate to your GRAY family.   However, I now do have a little more information on my relationship to the GRAY's.   My Gt.  Grandparents, John LEMON and Harriet WILLIAMSON had a daughter Mary Elizabeth LEMON who married a Thomas Frederick GRAY on 5th May 1891 at Armagh Third Presbyterian Church.   They had a son called Johnny who was born in Co. Antrim 1896 cc and found at the time of the 1911 Monaghan census, living with his Grandparents John and Harriet LEMON.   Elizabeth Gresty (nee Gordon),  W. Australia

Hello Jack
My name is Christine Casey Robinson...I understand you have copied old records from  parish churches in Monaghan ...I had a post on Irish Roots web and I was looking for info on Gillilands - Maxwell's  we think from Ballybay or Clontibret I'm  hopeful it was you who said your wife's sister married a Gilliland from Ballybay...Huh is it possible for you to post any info regarding marriages or births from before 1820's...The earliest name we have is a John Gilliland born around 1820 - a farmer who married Jane / Margaret Maxwell - marriage around 1840's we think ...they had three kids that we know of...Joseph Gordon, George  Ernest and Rachel....John died in a Quarry accident around 1850's and the family were allowed to live in the gatehouse of Clontibret parish church..by the minister Swanzy...that's all we know and would love to get a bit of earlier information   eg parents / siblings of John Gilliland and Jane/ Margaret Maxwell and accurate dates of birth and marriage if possible ....would very much answer a lot of brick walls for us too.....All of our modern Gilliland family live mostly in Glasgow Scotland which started with George Ernest... up to and including my mother....Barbara Gilliland (Casey) Thank you Jack... kind regards... Yes, the Church Records of 14 North Monaghan Churches are now copied - the data in these old books was tremendous, especially the Session Books & Vestry Books.  My wife's sister is Mrs Gilliliand attending Derryvally Church, at Ballybay - her other sister is Mrs Graham of Clontibret attending the Church of Ireland there - her husband is Church Warden so assisted with the Records.  My direct contact is (*) so you can e-mail me there directly

Thank you Jack
Thats great news and good info, I hope to come to Ireland to see some of the old records and sites of my ancestors when I return from Australia later this year....I admire the work you's have done to transcribe the old records to digital form, such a valuable resource, and I bet a wealth of information - well done, I will try to get a look at the online resources when I figure out how to
access the personal messaging system, thanks for your response and hopefully I will connect with you again at some point soon ....
Kind Regards - Christine Casey Robinson

Jane Turbitt dau, Robert Turbitt, Clonlonan, Tyholland married George Ernest Gilliland son, John Gilliland  +  Margaret Maxwell, Castleshane on 10th Feb 1874 by Rev J McAskie

The Maxwells came from Newbliss area and are a bit difficult to track down as they left the county. I'm working on rounding up the Maxwells as they come in and out of my line at various stages but indirectly via in laws... There are quite a few Gilliland families around the area.
