I am trying to delete the old directories on my rootschat website (http://www.skeleton-cupboard.rootschat.net) so I can load a whole lot of new ones on (I've redesigned the site).
I have uploaded the new files, but there is still a previous directory hanging on. It seems to be empty (apart from other directories/folders, which are also empty) but I can't delete it. This is the message I get when I try to delete the main directory, or any of the sub-directories: RMDir Report failed. please remove sub de vazut aici
Since uploading the new files I've been unable to view my site online, so I wondered whether the old directories were the problem?
Can anybody help me???
Thanks! Prue

Sounds like there could be a hidden server file inside the folder which is why it can't be deleted. Either that or there's a "lock" still on the folder - I've had this myself sometimes and I've had to quit my FTP program to terminate the lock.
How are you uploading your website to the server?
I use WS_FTP Pro and in the configuration there is a flag I can use "-a" to display all of the files including the server files so it might be worth looking into to see if there is something similar?

I think I'm going to get me some rootschat web space so I know how the system works.
There is a hierarchy that the server uses when getting the index file of a website. That is, if one index file isn't found it looks for another and so on until it can find it: 1st: index.html 2nd: index.htm 3rd: index.php
There are more but these are the only ones I know.
lock: When programs are working on a file they will usually "lock" it to stop another program or user changing it - renaming it, deleting etc.

Thank you both for your assistance. It turns out that I had added an extra "step" to the directories for my new website, which was tripping up the browser.
Just out of interest, I'm using a program called "Rapid Weaver" for Macintosh. It comes with a bunch of page themes and templates - the themes are pretty limited, but OK, and the templates are great for a non HTML-enabled person such as myself! It also publishes to the net, and this is where I got tripped up - by default, it creates a "home" folder on the hosting site, and it was this that was "hiding" the files from the browser.
Thanks again!
