Hello,
I am researching the family of James Fairbairn(Fairburn) who I believe married Eleanor Moody in 1771 in Earsdon, N Shields. I believe their first child was Robert Fairbairn born 1771 in Earsdon. He married Ann Tweedy again in Earsdon in 1792. Ann Fairbairn (nee Tweedy) sadly died in 1793. Robert was involved in the glass trade and later moved to Staffordshire. Is there anyone out there researching the same family. Would love to swap info?
Ann Tweedy's parents - Robert Tweedy and Ann Miller married 10/11/1764.
I would also be very interested to learn more about the Glassmaking industry in Earsdon, Gateshead, Newcastle Upon Tyne. I understand that the Glassmaker were a very mobile workforce, with a habit of marrying into other glass connected families.
Names linked to glassmaking: Fairbairn, Mallin, Moody.
Is anyone able to access wills? I have references to wills which I understand were produced by Northumberland & Durham Family History Society. I am particularly interested in the will of George Taylor, Wherryman of Swalwell 29 August 1794 Mentioned in will Robert Fairbairn of Cross House Proved 4 March 1794. Also the will of Matthew Swan of Earsdon 27 February 1795 who mentions Fairbairns and Sadler Proved 29 March 1796.

This will be of no specific help to you, but might help focus your research.
The fact that you quote " Earsdon, North Shields" gives me the clue that you got this info from LDS, who for some unknown reason use this geographic term.
Earsdon was/is a small hamlet, but it had an "ancient" parish, which held sway over a wide area, including largerbut newer communities ( e.g. half of Blyth, today Northumberland's most populous town, Seaton Delaval, Seaton Sluice etc.)
So everyone in the Earsdon Parish territory were baptised, married , buried in the parish church/graveyard.
But that does do mean they lived in Eardson itself.

The "lords of the manor" in this area were the French Norman family of Delaval. They had many commercial concerns, including Coalmining and Glassmaking.
The seat of the Delavals was Seaton Delaval Hall, in Seaton Delaval. Their glass factory was at Seaton Sluice, on the coast..

See the contents of the sections on Seaton Delaval and Seaton Sluice... the menu for each community contains several aspects, including history, old photographs ( Seaton Sluice glassworks shown), maps, Trade Directories, etc.
Today Eardson does not lie within the borders of Northumberland... so no section on Earsdon on that site.
Blyth also had a bottleworks, but did not produce the range of glass that Seaton Sluice did.( the eastern part of Blyth once lay within Eardson Parish boundary... the western half lay within Horton Parish territory)
The National Glass centre or museum or whatever, is situated in the City of Sunderland. Sunderland had high quality glassworks in C19th. So too for Seaham.
I know nothing of glassmaking in Newcastle and Gateshead.
Northumberland County Record Office holds Earsdon Parish records. This was situated in Morpeth, but this has just closed down in preparation for late-2006 opening of new Records/Colliery Musem/etc complex in Woodhorn.
In the meantime Morpeth Library is holding some Parish Records. Also Newcastle City Library has indexes of some Earsdon Parish records ( before 1837)

Thanks for the reply, that's really helpful. Yes, you're right I made the family up from LDS family search. As you can probably guess I have absolutely no knowledge of Northumberland.
I am clutching at straws really. I have traced my nan's line back to Robert Fairbairn who appears in Staffordshire in about 1816. The 1841 census shows that he was not born in the county of Staffordshire. The Fairbairn name is very rare in Staffordshire. I collect all references to Fairbairns + Variants in Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire and there are only a handful of families. Robert died in 1846 so I can't look at the 1851 census to find out where he was from. I didn't think I stood a chance of finding out. But then I got in touch with Mr Hardyman who is responsible for creating a Glassmaker's Index. He is wonderful. We exchanged numerous letters and he was able to tell me about my Fairbairn family in Staffordshire. I explained my problem of not knowing where Robert came from and he came up with the following reference
Robert Fairbairn
Married to Ann who was buried 1.6.1793 @ St Alban, Earsdon, Nbl. A glassman.
So I was straight on to Familysearch. I knew from the death certificate that in 1846 Robert was reported as being 75 years. This gave the date of 1771. The only reference I could find on Familysearch was for the following:
Robert Fairbairn son of James Fairbairn and Eleanor 22/9/1771 Earsdon. So I looked for a marriage - Robert Fairbairn to Ann Tweedy married 15/9/1792 Earsdon. I found a marriage for James to an Eleanor Moody 24/2/1771 Earsdon, N. Shields. Obviously, this is just made up and needs to be proved. But I would really like to find out more about this family. My Robert in Staffordshire named his dauther Eleanor and his son James. On Robert's marriage certificate in Staffordshire in 1816 he is described as a Widower. My gut feeling is that I have the right family - I just need to prove it now one way or another.

I know Brian Hardyman of York. His "labour of love", was collecting ALL info on Glassman all over the country.
I used to bump into him frequently in Archives in Newcastle. But have not seen him for a couple of years.
He wasn't into the Internet then, but maybe he is now.
I will have a look for Fairbairn info from St Albans, Earsdon., next time I am in archives.

Thanks that's kind.
What a small world. The last letter I got from him was in October 2002. I have just done and quick search on Google but there were only 3 references from people referring to him so I guess he is not on the internet.

(I'll have to be logging off now I am supposed to be revising for my Audit Exams. I am going to have to ban myself from the internet for the next 4 weeks.  Family History is too addictive and distracting!  )
