John Brittain
« on: Friday 14 October 05 11:40 UTC (UK) »

Could you please help me find the surname of wife of John Brittain b. 1835 Allesley.  He married Elizabeth Huh born approx 1837.    John Brittain was an agricultural labourer and in the 1861 census is listed as living at Stone House Lane, Allesley.  They had 10 children among them Albert Brittain who married Mary Washbrook.  Many thanks.

Thanks for this.  However, this is the father of the John Brittain I'm researching now.  I think John's wife was Elizabeth (possibly Thomas?) and they were both born in the middle to late 1830s.  They had 10 children, one of them Albert, my great grandfather.

If you're not sure of the marriage, you could get one of the childrens birth certs for Elizabeth's maiden name, these look like the closest matches going by their years of birth from the 1891 census -

Ellen Mary Brittain September 1874 Aston Vol 6d page 241

Herbert Alexander Brittain March 1878 Aston Vol 6d Page 448

Walter Britain June 1880 Meriden Vol 6d Page 491

Regards,
Catherine

Hi Catherine
Thanks for the information.  I think the Brittains you have listed are three of the children of John Brittain and his wife.  It's the surname of his wife that I'm trying to find.  I think her firstname is Elizabeth or Eliza, born around 1837.
Thanks
Kate

Elizabeths maiden name will be on the childrens birth certificate, its an alternative way of finding her maiden name if you cant find John's marriage to her (a method I've used myself a few times).....

John Brittains wifes name is Eliza Smith of Barby Northants 12/04/1838.
The Smiths lived in Ashby St Ledger area.
I think Albert Brittain is the Brother of my Granddad Leonard Brittain.
Arthur Brittain youngest son of Leonard is still alive at 101.

Sorry to go off topic here, but do either of you have any connection with William Brittain, brickmaker b 1831 Meriden? His father was also William, an ag lab, I believe born Leek Wooton.
