Jersey marriage look-up about 1854, please
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 03:33 UTC (UK) »

I would like to have the marriage date and bride's surname:

Francis ASHELFORD to Hannah  [ ? ] about 1852-1855, probably in St Helier or St. Saviour parish, Jersey.

Francis was single in St. Helier in 1851, with wife Hannah and son Francis age 5 1/2  in St. Helier in 1861.  Hannah was born in St. Saviour, so they may have married there.  The family likely was Methodist, so civil registration may be the only source available.

Francis had a niece, Charlotte ASHELFORD, who may have married on Jersey between 1851-1861 - Charlotte, her siblings, and her parents were on Alderney in 1851 and none of them can be found in the 1861 census anywhere.  I would like to find who Charlotte married so I can perhaps find her in later censuses.

Ruth -

I have found two marriages that may be of interest in the Registrar's index for St Helier parish church, Jersey:

both in the period Jan 1851-Sept 1854 -

Francis Ashelford  page 74
Sarah Ashlford (sic)  page 5

You can order copies of these cerificates, giving the above references, from:

The Superintendent Registrar
10 Royal Square, St Helier, Jersey   JE2 4WA

Certificates cost £10 each plus P&P (UK 50p, Europe £1.00 and elsewhere £2), payable to the 'Treasurer of the States'.

I did not have time to look at the parish register entry, but this is available in the Archives so I will try to have a look next week - should give maiden names and father's names etc.

Mike E. -
Oh, this is wonderful!!  I do hope you can look up the details of both the marriages.  I think Sarah would be the Sarah who was Francis's sister (whom I have not found after the 1841 census of the family, in Somerset).  The father should be William Ashelford.  If you have a chance to look further (1854-1861) for marriages on Jersey, any Ashelford or similar spelling would be much appreciated, as they would certainly be related.   Certificates will be difficult to obtain if the Registrar does not accept credit card payments.   Francis Ashelford remained on Jersey, last appearing there in the 1891 census, and at least two of his sons remained there.
I wrote to "P. Ashelford" whose Jersey address I got from an online telephone directory, but I had no reply.

Ruth -

The two marriages I mentioned are:

24 July 1853  St Helier Parish church
Francis Ashelford, aged 23  bachelor, labourer, living in St Helier. Born in Hulse, Somerset; father William Ashelford
Hannah BRAGG, aged 20, spinster, living in St Helier.  Born in St Saviour, Jersey.  Father William Bragg, tanner
Wtnesses:  Thomas Benton and Eliza Bragg

16 March 1851  St Helier Parish church
Thomas Brenton,  aged 23, bachelor, labourer, living in St Helier.  Born St Weane, Cornwall, father Thomas Brenton, farmer.
Sarah Ashelford, 27, spinster, living in St Helier.  Born Lance Legered, Somerset;  father William Ashelford.
Witnesses:  Francis Ashelford and Ellen Foster.

It is difficult to read the original entry, but although I think I have the place names right for 'Hulse' and 'Lance Legered' in Someset, and 'St Weane' in Cornwall, these may not be exact.

Also, I am not entirely sure if 'Brenton' might be 'Benton'.

I have not looked for Charlotte or any other Ashelfords yet - or for Hannah's family in St Saviour - but maybe next time.

Regards

Mike

Mike,
Thank you so much!  The fathers verify identifications and birthplaces, and spouses fill in some of the blanks on the family.  Francis's parents William and Sarah ASHELFORD lived at HALSE, Somerset, in 1841, but Francis was not baptised in the Halse parish church.  His sister, Sarah, was baptised at LYDEARD ST LAWRENCE parish church, Somerset.  I have done a lot of research in original parish registers and I know how hard they can be to read (and spelling was often bad, too, especially when names were not familiar to the writer).

Your original clue that Sarah Ashelford had married at St. Helier sent me to the transcribed baptisms online, and I found Tomas (sic) BRAMPTON born 5 May, bapt. 6 May 1851(probably a swift baptism because he was not expected to live), father Thomas, mother Sarah Ashelford.  I went to the 1851 census - no Bramptons. But I found the newlyweds, Thomas and Sarah BRENTON, and in their household was Sarah ASHFORD, 74, mother-in-law, widow.  I could not find the parents, William and Sarah Ashelford, in the 1851 census - it seems they - or she - went to Jersey by 1851.  I thought William died in 1854 in Somerset, BUT perhaps he died on Jersey?? And perhaps wife, Sarah, did too??

So now my priority is any and all ASHELFORD deaths on Jersey 1841-1861.  A brother of Francis, Isaac ASHELFORD, his wife Mary, and several children, were on Alderney in 1851 (available records there have been checked) but they come up missing in 1861.  Perhaps they were on Jersey and died there??   Are death registrations convenient to search?

I would like to do something for you --  I see HALLETT of Somerset on your list - Sarah Ashelford married John HALLETT 25 Oct. 1825 at Halse, Somerset - I have their family, if you wish it, let me know.

Success Story:
As a result of the look-up by Mike of the marriage in St. Helier in 1851 of Sarah ASHELFORD to Thomas BRENTON, I found them in St. Helier in 1851 and 1861 - but not thereafter.  On a hunch, I looked for them in Canada because Sarah's brother had emigrated to Ontario in the 1850s.   I found the BRENTON family in Ontario, Canada!  I found their arrival in 1867 at New York from Liverpool, Sarah BRENTON's death in Ontario in 1870, the remarriage there of Thomas BRENTON (to Annie Le Hougitt b. Jersey), the deaths of two of Sarah and Thomas's children, the marriage of the third child and his 1911 census residence in Saskatchewan.  What a bonanza from learning who a girl married!  Thanks, Mike!  And thanks, rootschat!
