MORRIS Salop
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 16:17 BST (UK) »

My great grandmother Emma Handley nee MORRIS was born 1843 in Stoke St Milborough, Shropshire.
She married John Han(d)ley dob 1842 who was also from Shropshire.
Would like to know about the Morris family that she came from.
Any information would be interesting.

Hello Barbara

Have you found Emma and John on any of the census returns?  What year were they married?

Thanks for your interest. I found Emma and John Hanley on the 1881 census. (LDS)
No marriage date I am afraid.
A kind person aw, has told me that also on that site, Emma was christened on 14 June 1845 at Stoke St Milborough, parents, James and Mary Morris. I don't know what I am doing wrong but even given this info by aw, I could not trace it, although I completely trust it as I am a novice and it all fits.

Regards

Hi again Barbara

Firstly, the christening that was found on the LDS "might" be the right Emma, but not necessarily so.

On FreeBMD I have found the following births in the Ludlow district:

Births Sep 1843
Morris  Emma    Ludlow  Vol 18  Page 70

Births Dec 1844
MORRIS  Emma     Ludlow  Vol 18 Page 67

Births Jun 1845
MORRIS  Emma     Ludlow  Vol 18 Page 83

Ludlow
Created 1st July 1837. Mainly in Shropshire, but included parts of Herefordshire.
Sub-districts : Cainham; Diddlebury; Leintwardine; Ludlow; Munslow.
GRO volumes : XVIII (1837-51); 6a (1852-1930).
Abdon, Ashford Bowdler, Ashford Carbonell, Bitterley, Bromfield, Caynham, Clee St. Margaret, Cold Weston, Culmington, Diddlebury, East Hamlet, Halford, Heath, Holdgate, Hope Bagot, Hopton Cangeford, Leintwardine North Side (1837-95), Ludford, Ludlow, Ludlow Castle, Munslow, Onibury, Richard's Castle, Stanton Lacy, Stoke St. Milborough, Stokesay, Tugford.

Registers now divided between Ludlow and Leominster districts.

Any of the 3 could be your Emma.

Do you definitely know either of her parents names?

In the 1861 John and Emma weren't married.

RG9/1837, folio 54, page 1
Bitterley, Shropshire

(Servant for a farmer William Small & wife Mary)

John Handley Servant Unmarried age 22 born Coreley Shropshire

Emma is proving more difficult!!!  There are a couple of possibilities for her which I will look into further before posting.

The only definite information I have about Emma is that her surname of Morris is given on my grandfather John Handley's birth certificate. DOB 23rd  August  1868 in Nash. The birth was registered at Tenbury, county of Worcester, Salop and Hereford.

Here's a possibility for Emma in 1861

RG9/1837, folio 44, page 9
Bitterley, Shropshire

Edward Morris Head Married 72 Coal Miner born Cainham Salop
Ann Morris Wife 77 Coal Miner's Wife born Salop Kingswinwest (hard to read ?? - there is a Kingswinford in Staffordshire)
Emma Morris Daughter 16 born Salop Bitterley
Benjamin Morris Son 10 born        "         "
Matthew Morris Son 7 born           "         "

Look at the parents ages Huh  The children are definitely listed as daughter/son and not grandchildren!!!!

There is another Morris family in Kingswinford, Staffordshire
RG9/8071, folio 90, page 23

Jane Morris Head Widow 43 born Canum (incorrect spelling by the enumerator!!!) Salop
Thomas Morris Son 21 Coal Miner
Emma Morris Daughter 17
William Morris Son 13 Scholar
Jane Morris Daughter 11
Eliza Morris Daughter 9
Eliza Morris Daughter 6 (obviously another enumerator's error here - repeated the name Eliza on the next line!!!!)

All the family were born in Canum (Cainham) Salop.

Jan
Thanks again for your help.
I am unable to think of any knockout factors for either of the Emmas.
Incidentally I live very close to Kingswinford, which is now part of Dudley, West Midlands.
