Lost Rowley marriage - Help!
« on: Saturday 15 October 05 18:25 BST (UK) »

Hi all

A puzzle that has taken 7 years and is proving extremely difficult, brick wall territory.  Basically my great grandfather is not in the GRO records!

John ROWLEY (b Dec 1858 Wolverhampton) married a Mary (Maria Monnington) POWELL (b Dec 1856 Pensnett, Staffs) between 1875-1882 in Staffordshire around the Cannock/Hednesford area I believe.  In 1881 census they are together but no children just John's younger sister.  Have now found all the birth certs for the 7 children and the oldest Louisa b 1882 in Hednesford area ie Brindley Heath.  Have checked Dudley Archives for Pensnett registers and can only finid one possible Mary Powell 20 years either side of her census birth date.  Have tentative parents but not sure until I can find a marriage cert.  I know they died in Co Durham in 1920's and have all the death certs which states her name as Mary Maria Monnington Powell.  All I can assume is it must have been a register office marriage IF they married.  Have checked various parish records from around the Cannock area etc and cannot find any trace.  Question is now what do I do?  Help!

The combination of Monnington and Powell should be reasonably rare

From FreeBMD
Births Dec 1875
POWELL  Laura Monington    Dudley  6c 7

Deaths Mar 1876
POWELL  Laura Monnington  0  Dudley  6c 15

This might be a niece of Mary Maria's whose father you can be track back on the censuses to confirm you have the correct Mary.

Or the other way around?

Mary Powell
Birth
September Q 1874
Ludlow  Volume 6a Page 551

Less useful since it leads to a Vicar's family in Cumberland on the 1881 census and shows Laura's birth certificate may well be quite risky.

Thanks Valda

The Laura Powell looks interesting.  Certainly Mary Maria is fairly rare and the nearest I found was 1856 in Kingswinford Ancient Chapelry which is near Pensnett.  The other one was in Dudley but not as near re the birth year.  Hence trying to find the marriage cert would help a lot.  I have a tentative father as John Pain Powell based on church registers at Kingswinford.  No other family 20 years either side, so very curious!  Rowleys are no problem back to 1636 in Broseley, Shropshire who moved to Wolverhampton, Wednesfield, Hednesford and finally Sunny Brow in Co Durham.  All miners of course!

Cheers

Based around the circa 1856 birth year and Kingswinford this is the most likely census entry for the 1861 census

RG9 2071 folio 70
Fox Street Kingswinford  Staffordshire
George Powell 30  Madeley, Shropshire, Head Married Coal miner
Eliza Powell 25 Madeley, Shropshire, Wife  Married
Thomas Powell 7 Madeley, Shropshire, Son
Ellen Powell 5  Madeley, Shropshire,  Daughter
Mary Maria Powell 3  Kingswinford, Staffordshire, Daughter
George Powell 11 mths Kingswinford, Staffordshire, Son

Thanks Valda

Had not found that etc as I had a different father from the IGI if it is the right one, but your info is interesting as there is a Mary Maria.  Must try and find the BMD for that one and see if see has another name in the middle.

You've got me going hunting again!

Cheers
