Hi - can anyone help me with my ancestress, Isabella RUSH??
From research, I know she was born 19.1.1863 at 8pm (she was a twin - her sister Julia was born at 10pm!) in Greenwich, London, to George and Mary Ann RUSH (nee DUFFETT). Her parents died in 1869, and Isabella, with all her siblings bar the eldest, were sent to the orphans' school (workhouse) in Sutton, Surrey. At some point, Isabella and her sister were split up, and Julia was sent to London, but it seems that Isabella was taken to Australia.
I don't know who took her, or which part of Australia she was taken to. I haven't been able to trace any sign of her so far. So, any and all help most gratefully received!
If you have any knowledge of Isabella RUSH, please contact me. If you have an idea of where I can search for more info, please contact me! Have never hadto research Australia before, so am a bit stuck!
Thanks for reading, and for your time!
Kind regards, Kate.

Kate,
What information do you have which makes you think that Isabella went to Australia.
The NSW BDM site at: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/ lists the marriage of an Isabella L RUSH to an Albert H MULLINGS in Sydney in 1896.
But whether this has any connexion with your Isabella RUSH ...

Hi Kate,
In general Australian certificates are very informative indeed and marriage certificates should contain names of parents of both bride and groom - though, of course, that depends very much on whether the informant/individual actually knew the correct facts.
Here is a site (Society of Australian Genealogists) which details content of Australian certificates from each State in very careful detail. http://www.sag.org.au/ozsources/civil.htm You will see that it does mention some caveats about NSW marriage certificates.
As for censuses, effectively there aren't any. Until the most recent census, all the censuses since Federation (i.e. when Australia came into being in 1901) were destroyed after statistical information was extracted. Some early convict musters (which included the free settlers) survive and are accessible but that is no use to you. The SAG site also has extensive information about musters and censuses - go to its home page, click on the 'Search' button, and enter Census as the search term.
I asked what more you knew about Isabella because your initial post indicated that she was your ancestor (i.e. your direct line) - but apparently not.
I checked some of the Victorian Indexes and didn't find her - but I don't have access to the complete set.
Perhaps someone else will check out all the Vic Indexes and also any from other States?
Good luck,
JAP
