If you have old photographs of your Hull connections which give details of the photographer, I would like to hear about them.  I'm hoping to trace some of the early photographers and studios.

Thanks, Bee.  Do you remember Jerome's, or know when they started?

Yes I certainly do remember Jeromes, was it Jameson Street or Whitefriargate? but sorry no idea when they started.

The dates I gave for the other photographers is either taken from the back of the photopostcard or an educated guess based on who is in the photo.

Just in case I come across any more, what's the earliest/latest that you are interested in?

I remember Jerome's as Jameson St.  They always touched up the photos, especially around the eyes, so you had a vaguely oriental look.
I'm interested in any date.  One can get them from directories, but with no indication of what sort of photographer they were, what their studios were like, etc.  One of the ones you gave me, Blackmore, appears on the 1892 directory on Albion St., so he lasted a long time.
Thanks again for your help.

This is just an opportunity to look through some old photos that I've inherited. Cheesy

Wreathall & Wright, Hull, (Seaman's Studios) 1917
Cecil Studios c1930's
Kate Hunter (photographer) 49 Whitefriargate, guessing about 1930's as I've no idea who the person is.

Off to bed now so goodnight

Suttontrust,

I've found two photographers listed in Slaters 1855 directory of Hull

Ann Cooke of 6 George Street
John Thompson of 2 Waterworks Street.

Also the book, Kingston upon Hull, A Second Sellection (Images of England, 2002) in it's introduction gives a brief history and development of photography in Hull. It states that photography was first 'sold' in the Hull press in 1843 and a trade directory of 1863 listed sixteen professional photograhpers. The two most famous compaines producing pictures/postcards in Hull were William J Wellstead of Paragon Street (1880s onwards) and Parish and Berry of Waltham Street (1901 onwards).

Hope this is useful toyou.

Thanks, Ian.  Just noticed in your name interests the name of Dearing.  Are you related to the Barbara and Priscilla Dearing I knew at school?

Hello Sutton Trust,

I was looking at my copy of Aspects of Hull - Discovering Local History (1999) last night. Chapter five features an interesting piece titled Mr Parrish and Mr Berry, the photographers of Waltham Street.

Hope this is of some use if your research.

Hi  Smiley

I have an old photo of my Gt Gt Grandfather taken c.1880. He was born in Germany but lived in Hull at the time. This photo was taken by a German photographer.

On the back it says "Photograph by L.Holzheimer on the corner of Commercial Road,Hull".

I've got a couple for you though they're not really early.

There's R. Lewis of 23 George St, Hull. Phone 47910. This photo was taken in 1940.

Also R. T. Watson (the initials are not very clear though the surname is. This is 70 Anlaby Rd, Hull. The photo was taken in 1925.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi suttontrust

I have got dozens and dozens of old photos from Hull photographers.
Sadly I don't know who most of my rellies are as there are no clues on the back, but when I have a moment I'll go through them for the photographers details and post them back here.
