Hello AngusM. I think I have now completed all I can do on the MacMillans of Benbecula. If you do have a chance to send on the references in the Ardkenneth Register to the birth of John and Catherine's children (Angus, Michael, Mary and John P.) I would be very grateful. What more can I say? Finally I found Peter in British Columbia on the 1911 Census and, as I suspected, he had married during the decade between 1901 to 1911. He had four children: three daughters and a son, John S. (b. 1909) in Delta, B.C. on the west coast of Canada. So, all told, John MacMillan had at least twelve male grandchildren. How many of them survived childhood and had sons of their own, I don't know, but it would not be impossible to learn.
Another item you might be interested in is on the Scottish death registration in 1867 of Angus MacMillan, the father of our Cape Breton John. Angus' parents were named on the registration as Malcolm MacMillan and Mary (Macdonald) MacMillan. The informant was Ranald MacPherson of Torlum.
If there is anything further I could look up or try-to-find on the destiny of the MacMillans who left Benbecula bound for Cape Breton in 1844, then I would be pleased to try. In the meantime, I'm turning my attention fully now to Donald John McPhee who emigrated from South Uist. I'll begin by studying a good map and focussing on the geographical leads that you gave me (above). Is there a thread on RootsChat that you know where I might learn some biographical information on the McPhees from South Uist? I have enjoyed this MacMillan connection very much. My best regards, Helen

Hello Helen: Yes I have the d. registration of Angus MacMillan in Uachdar. From memory, his age when he died was rather overstated at 96. There was one family record that had the family as of Angus of Donald of Malcolm, which would have made them my line but I am sure that was a transcription error when the entry was made.
Thanks too for the info. on the descendants of John in the west, which I did not have. I still live in hope that one day I may open the DNA database and find a descendant has been tested. If you ever meet up over the ether with such a man [its has to be a male for Y-DNA purposes] please do feel free to give them a prod in that direction.
As for MacPhee in Iochdar, I imagine you will almost immediately find yourself in Hestimul, which is a small island long held by the family in the sound between Iochdar and Benbecula. There you will find a positive morass of Archies and Iain/Johns. Do let me know if you have geographical issues or if I can help at all. Meanwhile, I will have a look and see if there is anything I have that might help. Nor will I forget the births of John MacMillan's children, Regards Angus

Hello all,
I am researching my father's branch, who are from Kennedys from Skye and MAcleans/Macdonalds of Benbecula. We recently got hold of a photgraph, taken outside Ardvasar School on Skye, in 1937, which my father and his sister also appear in. Their schoolteacher is also in the picture, and who my dad informs me was a Harriet MacMillan, from he recalls Benbecula. Would she be in any way connected to your Macmillans? If so, I can perhaps attach a copy of the photo on here?
Regards
McVitie

Hello again McVitie. Apologies for not responding earlier to your note about Harriet MacMillan schoolteacher thought to be from Benbecula. I have struggled so far to identify her so thought it was time I posted to say so. Harriet often shows up also as Effie and is a conventional translation of the Gaelic Oighrig. As the photo dates from 1937, she may well have been born after 1901, and thus missed by the latest available census, that for 1901. I would be interested to see the photo and, if it can be printed off large and clearly enough, I will happily show it to members of various MacMillan families in Benbecula. Someone I am sure will have the answer. For that purpose, if you are happy to do so, it might help if you could email it directly to me rather than just attach to the board? Angus

Hello Again Angus,
Thanks for your response to my post regarding Harriet MacMillan.
From the picture I would estimate her age to be in her late fifites, born around 1880s. I just tried sending you a PM, but when I went to attach the photo there was no facility to do so - I'm sure PMs allow attachments?
Shall I attach it on here instead? Kind regards
Mcvitie

On a visit last week, I had the chance to ask about Harriet MacMillan, schoolteacher in Ardvassar school, Skye in the 1930s. She was from a family at Kennuachar, 2 Griminish, Benbecula that later moved to the other end of the township. She was born in 1894 and she and her sister seem to have left for Skye together and are recalled as of clann Mhuirechaidh i.e she was a daughter of Murdoch MacMillan and his wife Mary MacDonald from 14 Lionacleit. Murdoch was born in North Uist and moved to Benbecula as a young man with his parents Donald MacMillan and Harriet Morrison. I do have details of the rest of these families if anyone reading this is interested. Anyhow, McVitie, I hope that answers your father's question about who Harriet was. Angus

Hello again Angus.
Many thanks for providing Harriet's family details. I will be passing these on to my dad over Xmas, and see if this jolts any further memories from him.
Kind regards
McVitie

Hi all, I have begun looking into Macmillans of Benbecula as my husband's grandfather came from Benbecula. It doesn't sound as though he is connected with any of the Macmillans already discussed though. His name was Lachlan Macmillan and he was living at Hacklet on the 1901 Census with his parents Angus and Sarah (maiden name Macpherson) and several brothers and sisters, Donald, Cathelus, Flora and Mary. My husband's cousin has been doing some research and remembers visiting Benbecula in 1966 and meeting Doleena, who we believe was Flora's daughter, and Doleena's daughter Mary and grandchildren Cathelda and Donald. They were living in Liniclate Muir, Creagorry at the time. We are hoping to visit Benbecula in the Summer and would love to make contact with any relatives that are still surviving.

Well, here is one relation. Angus was a son of my 2xg'grandfather John MacMillans brother, Donald Ban MacMillan, who lived at 25 Lionacleit. Donald was son of Angus MacMillan and Mary MacLellan in Torlum and that Angus was son of Donald of Malcolm. You may well have that already but I do have pretty good detail on the extended family. Sarah MacPherson was where Cathal or Cathellus came into the family as a name as her father was Cathellus, a descendant I believe of the MacMhuirich bards to Clanranald.
I'm quite happy to answer any questions you may have on the board but do have such a mass of info. you might want to email me directly. I can certainly put you in touch with relations and point to the places to see when you visit Benbecula.
Regards
Angus

Wow, I can't believe I've found someone so quickly. All you information is new to me, we've only gone back as far as Angus and Sarah. I'd love to know more, particularly about what happened to all Lachlan's siblings. Lachlan left Benbecula for Sheffield not long after the 1901 census and there seems to be have been little contact since. He married in 1911 and had 6 children of which the 2 younger are still alive, my father in law Donald and his sister Olive. I'd email directly but not sure how. Thanks for your help so far. Jennie

Hi AngusM My grandfather was Alexander Macmillan of Benbecula, born from memory on 3rd December 1843. My father Richard Alexander Macmillan was born 20th October 1916 in Dumbarton and emigrated to Australia in 1948. My great grandfather was Michael Ivor. My Grandfather Alexander was married twice and my father was the youngest of his second marriage which was to Eleanor Sanderson, my grandmother. I would be interested in any information you might have on this/my family. Maybe there are some relations elsewhere in the world interested in the Australian connection. Regards Richard
