Holywell Garden Nurseries
« on: Thursday 20 October 05 17:46 UTC (UK) »

My gr/gr/grandfather William Jones had the nurseries as far back as 1881 and as far as I know they were still there in the 194o's.  They were in the Greenfield area of Holywell.
They were in front of a lake and were opposite some white cottages, which is where the family lived.
I wondered if anyone living in Holywell could let me know if there is still nurseries there now

Maureen.

This is now the Greenfield Valley and the whole area has been revitallised for the touristry. The lakes are still there but the old industrial buildings concerned with copper and wool have been tidied up. The whole area with Strand woods and Basingwerk Abbey is now a pleasant recreational area.
I am fairly sure that the cottages and nurseries have gone, however if they were situated in the redevelopment area , then they may have been preserved. A railway line , now long gone, connected Holywell to the Holyhead/Chester main line, and this ran up the valley. This is now a pathway that connects the lakes.

Thanks very much for your reply.

I thought it would be long gone but had hoped it would still be there.
Many thanks

Hello Maureen: I have revisited this thread and now I know where the White Houses are situated then they may still exist. What I said previously refers to the valley and the houses were situated above it.
Whatever I find will be photographed. I still prefer to use film, but I should be able to scan and email. (says he!)
Regards Eldon.

Hello Maureen: Visited area today and no sign of houses or gardens. Spoke to two residents. Looks as if they have been demolished.
Regards Eldon.

Thanks for your reply Eldon,

I suppose it was to much to expect they were still there after all this time.

Thanks for looking

My 3x great grandfather Edward Jones was a nurseryman and seedsman in Holywell; I believe that his nursery was on Pen y Ball st. His eldest son John Jones followed in his father's footsteps and then John's son William Arthur Jones continued the business until at least 1901. There could be a connection.

Hello there, I live in a very old house in Whitford street ,it was a farm and owned by the earl of Denbigh, which dates back to the 16oo's and on the deeds it shows that the back garden and land opposite where the school now is, was once 'Queens Garden Nurseries' I do believe that on maps around the 1800's it also states this, the land now has OAP accomadation on it and houses , but it did spread upto the top road originally. Hope this is of interest.

Hello  Lunarstar

That is interesting,  there seems to have been quite a few nurseries in the area back then and to make it even harder  quite a few with the owners being called Jones.
