On a good day it's only about an hour to London. We can do Heathrow in 40 minutes. We live on the Reading side of Basingstoke. There's also the train of course, but not this week as they are doing some major works on the lines at Basingstoke, so all the commuters are being bussed to their destinations.

The ID required has to have your address on - that's why they ask for things like Driving Licence or Utility Bill - the passport does not have current home address details
I did check with my local RO yesterday as I have lost my card and will renew when I go to the RO next week.
Also have photo ID card for Kew and photo ID card for the Universities Library in Cambridge. I look as though I should have been transported long ago on all of them

When I was last there it was big and busy but still felt roomy; apart from the shop. Their website should give info on disabled access; will check it out in 2 weeks time!*
You are restricted as to how much you can take into the "rooms" (no pens, limited amount of paper etc) and it has to be in a see-through bag. I've got my own but I'm sure the security/reception staff have some to hand out.

When we went along we warned them in advance that if possible we wished to take photographs. They were more than happy with that. We used a digital camera and had no problems whatsoever.
However, I believe you now have to pay for taking photographs (my husband mentioned new charges of GBP 5.00). I don't know if this was for Kew or our local RO?
One of our photographs proved invaluable and showed us that a second visit to follow up the land survey and the receipt books was needed. It was a sort of Domesday survey but done in the 1930s - very useful to our research.
As with all Record Offices you can only use pencils, and at Kew they only allow loose sheets of paper or a spiral bound notebook (you can buy them quite cheaply nowadays in A4 size at the supermarket). I have a clear plastic 'handbag' that I use for all visits to our local RO and that was fine for Kew. However, they confiscated my eraser (rubber), which was a lovely soft artist quality one from my local art shop I did have a good supply of those cheap propelling pencils (which I usually buy in packets of 10 and keep ready in the clear plastic handbag). I always keep a magnifying glass in my bag - which has proved useful many times. Tissues, some change for coffee machines etc., my CARN card, and my own white cotton gloves as some of the ROs provide you with synthetic gloves which are quite peculiar and leave your hands smelling very strange
The handbag was a summer free gift on a teen magazine a few years ago - I bought the mag just to get the bag (gave the magazine to a neighbours daughter I wouldn't be without it.

I was there yesterday and kept my eyes open for answers....
They do supply see through bags so no need to worry about that. There is a cloakroom with lockers which are free so you don't need money for that. They do not charge for cameras - but you are supposed to register them upstairs in the copying room (I forgot and no one seemed to notice). There are disabled lifts but you have to navigate through security first Yes - change for photocopies is good. You have to get a card first (from the copying room upstairs) and then you load credits onto it with the machine. Some days they are open to 5 and some days to 7pm so make sure you pick the right day if youa re only doing one day. You can take laptops in and plug them in You can use laptop in cafe and log on to wi-fi (apparantly - not that I have tried it) You can use their computers in the cafe (very handy for checking e-mails at lunch time of if you can't bear to stop researching even to eat) And if you have any spare time... The Shopping centre next door has M&S and TK Max so something for all ages!

I'm afraid it is still no nearer to Kew Station though
..although I did see a bus outside the shopping centre which must have been going somewhere...
