John Ellis JONES, b. abt 1812 Machynlleth, d. 1891 Newtown - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 18 January 09 16:04 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on John Ellis Jones, especially his baptism and his marriage to Jane (don't know her maiden name but she was born abt 1813 in Llanidloes).  I can trace them through the cenus 1841-1891 living in Llanidloes then Newtown.

Hope someone can help.

Many thanks

Neither Powys FHS nor Montgomeryshire FHS list transcripts of the parish registers of Machynlleth or Llanidloes amongst their publications and there doesn't seem to be anyone on Rootschat doing lookups in this area, so short of visiting the area (which is a bit difficult when you live abroad) does anyone have any suggestions how I could find this info.

I've found out that my gr gr gr grandfather, John Ellis Jones, spent the last ten years of his life in Newtown and Llanidloes Workhouse.  He's there on the 1881 and 1891 census.  He died in 1891.  Where would he have been buried?  Did the workhouse have it's own graveyard, were inmates buried in the local churchyard or were they returned to their original parish?  I know that his grave is not likely to be marked but it would be nice to know where his final resting place would have been.

Thanks

Hi Ruth

I've checked the online Montgomery FHS Baptism records on FindMyPast but there is no birth or marriage showing for a John Ellis Jones and there are far too many John Jones to look through.

I've got some other sources and will look through them later.

Have you seen this site:

Hi again

I see that on the 1851, they have a son Samuel aged 2. This registration is more easy to find than the other children born post-1837 (John Margaret & Henry). I think this is his birth registration:

March q, 1849,Newtown vol 27 page 143

If you were to get this (specifying parents as John and Jane), it would give jane's maiden name which might help to pinpoint the marriage - unless she was a Jones as well  :-\

From this census entry, it looks as if the eldest child, Ellis, was born circa 1836  so the marriage is probably just before that date.

I've been checking for a baptism of son Ellis but he's not listed.

This makes me think that maybe the family were non-conformists and no baptism records would show up as all the available listings are for the Established (C of E) church.

Hi Gadget

Thank you for the information.

I had noted that Samuel was born about 1849 (he was my gr gr grandfather) but I had three possible birth records for him, one in 1849 and two in 1850 so I hadn't yet sent for the certificate because it works out rather expensive when you need several records checked.  Now that you've pointed out the obvious fact I'd missed, that if he was 2 on the 1851 census he probably wasn't one of the 1850 births I think it's time I sent for the birth certificate!

Thanks once again for your efforts.  I'll post an update when I have the birth cert.

Hello

Sorry for the delay in updating this thread but I've been spending my genealogy money in other areas of my family tree and have only now got around to sending for Samuel's birth certificate.

According to Samuel's birth certificate, his mother was Jane Jones formerly Dakin.  This unusual surname came as quite a shock as my family tree is full of the usual Welsh surnames - Jones, Thomas, Williams etc.  I've found Jane's baptism on the IGI in 1813 in Llanidloes, the daughter of David and Hannah Dackins but I still can't find details of her marriage to John Ellis Jones.

I've found a couple of possibilities for John Ellis Jones' baptism in Machynlleth but without knowing his father's name it's impossible to distinguish between them.

Hopefully some clever Rootschatter will point me in the direction of John Ellis and Jane's marriage.

Best wishes

Ruth

Hello Ruth

I've done some checks but still can't find a marriage for them. Dakin/s probably has a number of variants and I've tried on the obvious ones  :-\

My best advice is for you to contact Powys Archives:

http://www.powys.gov.uk/index.php?id=647

There is a contact address, tel number and e-mail on the page.

They will probably charge for a search but I can't think of any other way to find the info.

Hi Gadget

Thanks for trying.  I think perhaps I'll put this one on the back burner for now.  I'm hoping to visit the area in the Autumn so I'll try and visit the archives then.  I'd like to take a look at the workhouse records as well as the parish registers.

Regards
