Callander - MacEwen's Buildings 1893
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 13:45 GMT (UK) »
I would love to know where the MacEwen's Buildings in Callander are/were.   I have tried to find re google but no luck so maybe they no longer exist.   My great great grandfather, James Stevenson died there so just curious to find out.  Many thanks.

Brina :)

Scottish PO Directories

http://www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office

Try searching the "Stirling" Directory

You may find an appropriate map which has the buildings marked:

I have tried both suggestions.   I had already tried the NLS to no avail.   Should I move this to the Stirling section.   Did consider this in the first instance.

Do you know where James Stevenson was living in the 1891 census?

I know it is possible to do an address search on some of the pay sites, however not sure if this also applies to Scottish records?

If you can find MacEwen's Buildings in the 1891 census, and check the neighbouring area this might give you a better idea where it was (you may find streets that still exist for example, to give you an area to focus on).

That is my technique for finding addresses in England anyway. ;)

Scotland may cause problems as you have to purchase the census and the pay sites only have transcriptions .... someone may have more knowledge of this than I do.  :-\

[Was your James married to Susan, and living Main St Callender in 1891?]

Thank you everyone for your kind responses.  The James Stevenson I am referring to was married to Susan.   In 1891 census they were living in Main Street and previously at Bridgend.

I mentioned Stirling as Callendar appears in the Stirling directory but I realise that Callander is in Perthshire, but thank you for that.

Will do a bit more digging to find out what happen to susan their daughter who appeRs to have lived at home with them.

Many thanks.

Brina  :)

Callander is covered in the Stirling Directories.

There is an entry in the 1881-82 Stirling Directory under "Callander" for "Macewen & Co, D & J, grocers and wine merchants, Main Street".

And where were Susan and daur Susan living in 1901? Still in Main Street?
Considering hanes teulu's directory find, I wonder if MacEwan's Buildings on Main St would have been shops on ground level with accommodation above?
