Desperately Seeking Richard Mahoney! (b1850, Cork)

Hi All,

I am trying to trace the birth of my Great Great Grandfather Richard Mahoney. I believe he was born in Cork County in April-December 1850. By 1874 he was getting married in South Wales, by 1891 living in Middlesbrough with the family, and died in 1900 in Middlesbrough.

I know that Irish census records from the 1800s are more or less non existent, and sadly none of the fragments relate to Cork in 1851/1861.

Is it worth checking land records and/or religious censuses? Any advice on where else I can look? I have an Ancestry.co.uk membership but can't find much

I found this via RootsIreland and it seems to be the only likely candidate. Any ideas on whether I can make further checks anywhere at less than €5 a go? 

Richard Mahoney bapt 11 Aug 1850 Castlelyons, son of Thomas Mahoney & Mary Carey.  The sponsors were James May & Catherine Griffin

Hi Jenny,  This is probably not connected to your question but I have a Michael Mahoney acting as a witness at the wedding of my Great great grandmother in New South Wales in 1858.  My Great great grandmother was from Cork.  Any chance of a connection here?

Hi Jenny, It appears that this Michael Mahoney would not be related to your great great grandfather directly if your g g grandfather was born in Cork. No shortage of Mahoneys coming to New South Wales in the mid to early eighteen hundreds.  Thanks for your reply. Good luck searching.

What is his father's name on Richard's marriage certificate? Does it match the baptism?

This may be the GRO reference for the marriage registration if you don't have the certificate yet. As Heywood says, it is essential!

Thanks once again, folks! Unfortunately the people I contacted in Wales haven't been able to track down the marriage cert yet but they've given me an alternative to try, so I'll see what I can find. I think the marriage certificate is my only hope, to be honest :/

The GRO is the best place to purchase the certificate - £10 each - giving the reference above but just name Richard not his spouse as well.
