Crago family of Liskeard/St Austell mid 1800s
« on: Monday 21 April 14 19:32 BST (UK) »
On 30 Sept 1856, George Crago married Elizabeth Allen in St Austell.

1861 census shows children thus;

Ellen, 5
John, 4
Elizabeth Ann, 2
Joseph, 1

1871

Ellen, 14
Elizabeth Ann, 12
Eliza, 9
John, 6
Emily, 4
Joseph, 1

New John and Joseph so possible deaths for the 1861 ones?

1881

Elizabeth Ann, 21
Eliza, 18
John, 16
Sarah J, 15
Emily, 13
Joseph, 12
Mary A, 9
William H, 6
David, 6

1891

Joseph, 21
Annie, 20 (this, I know, is Mary Ann - she married later in 1901 but on her death certificate was Violet Annie!!)
William H, 17
David, 16
Thomas H, 7 (Grandchild)
Elizabeth A Rule (she married William Rule in 1878 and had the above Grandchild - where William is, I cannot fathom..)

Sarah J has gone and I can find no marriage for her although there is one in 1905 to Albert Welch.
No idea where John is - there seem to be a few John Cragos around
Eliza J Crago married Edwin Heard in 1890 and is living next door to the Cragos in 1891
No sign of Emily Crago - cannot see any marriages for an Emily

1901

Thomas H, 17 is living with George - is living Thomas who is listed as his son! Surely it must be his Grandson and if so, why is he there?
No sign of David either

Can anyone solve some of these mysteries please?

many thanks

Phil

So Elizabeth A Crago 21 is down as single in 1881 but she married William Rule in 1878?

I presume the grandson Richard H Rule age 2 in 1881 belongs to her and William.

And in 1891 she is a lodger not a daughter and is married using the name Rule but her son born after the marriage is called Crago  ???

Does the grandchild Thomas H Crago definitely belong to Elizabeth?

Thank you for these - I'm not sure about Thomas H - there is a Thomas Rule born in 1883.

What has happened to Ellen? Has she died as well?

No sign of any marriage/death for David - maybe he went abroad??

Hi

I have been trying to find David Crago bc 1875. In 1881 you have him and his brother, William H as age 6. I checked again and David is 5. I wonder why I can’t find a birth registration for him.

In 1900, there is a David Crago, boarder (in the home of William Charles Williams), b April 1877, England; arrived 1895, iron ore miner living in Negaunee, Marquette,Michigan.
1910: David Crago, boarder, (in the home of James Billings) 32, b England, Iron miner living:  Ishpeming Ward 1, Marquette,Michigan
1920: David Crago, boarder (James Billings b England), 42, b England, Miner in Iron mine, living:First Street, Ishpeming Ward 1, Marquette,Michigan

I then found a World War I Draft registration card for a David Crago, b April 1st 1877, living at the same address as above. The writing is very unclear but James Billings is mentioned. His next of kin is his sister, Liza  **ard of *****rose, Cornwall, England.
There is a comment: Stroke ? paralysis left leg. Other words hard to make out.
Signed Sept 12, 1918

I see that Eliza J Crago married Edwin Heard in 1890. I wonder if she is the next of kin. Unfortunately I can’t seem to find her after 1891.

I’m not sure how to prove that this is your David.  :-\

Ah ha …Edwin and Eliza J heard had a son Telfer Thomas Heard in 1890. In 1891 he’s with his parents and in 1901 with his mother, Elizabeth Heard and aunt.

1901;
Camborne
Wheal Gerry?
Elizabeth Heard, head, 35, single?, b Cornwall, St Austell
Annie Thomas, sister, 28, single, b St Austell ….This must be Mary Ann Crago who married William John Thomas in 1891.
Telfer Heard, son, 11, single b Camborne
William J Thomas, daug  ::) , single 10 b Camborne

Very strange that they are both single. Can’t spot Telfer again …will keep looking.
Ahhhh
1911
Eastern lane, Camborne
Eliza PLINT, head , mar, Married 7 years, 2 children, 2 living, b St Austell
Telfor HEARD, son,  20, single, labourer in foundry,  b Eastern Lane, Camborne

Eliza HEARD = Alfred PLINT
Dec q 1904, Redruth
Vol 5c pg 433

I wonder if David had not heard (excuse the pun  ;D )  of his sister’s marriage unless I had the wrong David.

This may well be Emily’s death:
Emily Crago, age 14 (bc 1868)
Died June quarter 1882
Redruth
Vol 5c page 168

oops ..Milliepede spotted Emily's death as well. :)

Hi again

I think Ellen may have married James Laity

Marriage:
Ellen Crago to either:
Edward John Brokensha
Or
James Laity
Oct q 1882, Redruth
Vol 5c pg 436

Couldn’t find her under Brokensh* but did find this Ellen under Laity.

1891
Pare Brackes? St
Camborne
Transcribed as Lassey
Jas Laity, mar, 27?, mason b Camborne
Ellen Laity , mar, 36, b St Austell
Richard H , son, 7 b Camborne
William , son, 3 b ditto

1901
Parc Bracket St, Camborne
Ellen Laity, head, 43, widow, washerwoman b St Austell
Richard, son, 18, tin miner, b Camborne
William, son, 13 b ditto
Lily , dau, 9 b ditto
Garfield, son, 4, b ditto

1911
39 North Parade, Camborne
Ellen Laity head , 55 , widow, b St Austell. Unfortunately she doesn’t state how many children she’s had.
Garfield, son, 13, at school, b Camborne

I think Garfield was born Augustus Garfield Laity, Oct q 1897, Redruth. Haven’t been able to find James Laity’s death.

Ordering the marriage cert would hopefully prove that she's your Ellen.

Hi again,

Regarding Sarah Jane Crago. I found a marriage on the Cornwall OPC for this Sarah …everything adds up except her middle name and ages; (although the ages could mean that they were over 21)

6 July 1889
Tuckingmill

William James Stevens = Sarah ANN CragoE
Groom’s info: 21, bachelor, miner, living at Dolcoath Rd, Father is James Stevens a miner
Bride’s info: 21, spinster, living in Camborne, Father is GEORGE CRAGOE, Lab

Witnesses:
George Cragoe and Elizabeth Ann RULE

I can’t find them in 1891 but I remembered seeing a passenger list for Alfred Plint, husband of Eliza Heard nee Crago.
In  1907 Alfred PLINT, 29, married, miner, from Camborne, going to Baltic, Michigan to join his brother-in-law W H STEVENS. Alfred was traveling with his other brother-in-law, THOMAS H CRAGOE, 22, miner from Camborne.
They departed Southampton 27 April 1907 and arrived New York on 7 May 1907 on board the “New York”.
Only snag here is William Stevens’ middle intial “H” and not “J”.

Thomas H Crago/e was bc 1885 … he was living with George in 1891, aged 17 and listed as his son. Alfred Plint and Thomas H are referred to as Brothers-in-law on the passenger list. So was he George’s grandson or son? It looks like Thomas H returned as he is with his wife, Mabel, in 1911.

I am still trying to find William and Sarah Stevens.  Unfortunately there are no US census records for 1890 . So if Sarah and William left soon after they married we won’t be able to find them.
There is a passenger list with a William J (46) and Sarah Stevens (46, bc 1866) departing NY arriving 9 Nov 1912 Southampton. They landed in Plymouth.
