Two Phillips brothers
« on: Monday 04 August 14 22:05 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am wondering if anyone can help me *finally* once and for all find out - or get closer to finding out - what happened to two brothers, Joseph Henry and James Phillips.

Joseph Henry was born 1878 in New Zealand, although his Cornish parents returned to St Ives before 1891. He married Annie Thomas Perkin in 1898 and in 1901 are living with their son, also Joseph Henry, in St Ives. I know they had a couple of other children but as far as I am aware, only one, Ellen Berriman Phillips, lived to adulthood. Ellen B moved to Australia in later life but what on earth happened to Joseph Henry and Annie after 1901? (There is a death record for Annie Thomas Phillips in 1964, which I am presuming to be Annie.)

James Phillips (no middle name that I can find) was born c 1886 and I've last found him living with his mother, Emma Phillips, and siblings in St Ives in 1901. No trace in 1911, and no clues re marriage/emmigration/war service/etc.

Can anyone help? I'm going nuts trying to work out what happened to these two brothers.

Any tips would be as ever hugely appreciated.

Thanks so much  :)

Hi

Have a bit of a lead for you.

Joseph Henry Philips Junior served in WW1 in the Dorsetshire Regiment. His address on enlistment and discharge is the same as 1901 census 'St an Garrow' St Ives.

His next of kin is his father Joseph Henry Phillips, same address.

WOW that's fantastic - thank you!

I'd always thought Joseph Jr died prior to the war as a young teen, so this is great news.

so if J sr is alive by the end of the war... Where is he in 1911!?  ???

And also, what happened to Joseph Jr after the war ended?

I've found a possible marriage for him in 1925... Does anyone know if post-war baptism records are available online at all?

Thanks so much

Can't answer your question about baptisms, Bramble, but thought I'd say that, as well as wider searches,  I've been through every name on a certain index for St Ives in the hope of finding a mis-spelling, and Joseph Henry Snr, wife Annie and daughter Ellen Berriman are not to be seen.    :-\

baptisms for that period won't be on the opc site in case the person baptised is still alive. FamilySearch images stop earlier. The opc has later records available for look ups, contact details here

Hi Trish!

I think there WERE two daughters - one born 1900 who died young and one born in 1902, who lived to adulthood.

Thanks :)
