Meehans Carney, Ballyscannell, Sligo to NYC USA
« on: Thursday 02 March 06 23:15 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Meehan family in Sligo, Ireland....

My gggrandmother, Margaret Meehan, listed below, immigrated to NYC 1890. Married John Jackson. Lived in New Rochelle,NY and had seven children whose names I include for possible clues to her parents' names. I sure hope someone is looking for these two missing 'aunties' who
went to the USA.
Patrick Henry b.8/1894
Anna b.8/1893
Margaret b.11/1895
John b. 6/1898
Charles b. 1900 or 1901
James b. 10.1899
Helen- 'Dolly' b. 1905 or 1906

A researcher in Ireland found my gggrandmother's info as follows:
AHAMLISH PARISH. All births were in Carney or Ballyscannell...
BAPTISMS: 1846-1870.

The entries below are all the Meehan’s baptisms only to James Meehan & Ann Gillan.
This register was not in a great condition, many entries wrote in pencil were illegible because of fading.
Jacob latin for James.

Baptisms:
Apr 18th 1855. Sister to Margaret...
Bridget to Jacob Meehan & Ann Gillan.
Witnessed by Thomas Gillan & Mathilda McGowran.

June 3rd 1857. Brother to Margaret...
Thomas to Jacob Meehan & Anne Gillan.
Witnessed by Michael Freel & Hanora Bratly.

Aug 13th 1861. (my gggrandmother)
Margaret to Jacob Meighan & Ann Gillan.
Witnessed by Anna Meighan & ? Gilworth.

Sep 2nd 1866. Brother to Margaret...
Jacob to Jacob Meehan & Ann Gillan.
Witnessed by Jacob & Ann Clancy.

Anything familiar?  Please e-mail....

Gigi

James Meehan and Anne Gillon were my gggrandparents. They married at Ahamlish on 7th Nov 1850
 Had at least eight children Maria b 1851,Anna b 1853,Bridget b 1855,Margaret then in 1859 a son,
Thomas(my g grandfather, Margaret b 1861, Matilda b 1863, James b 1866 and Patrick b 1871(we think)
One thing I discovered...some dates are incorrect. In the 1901 census Patrick is shown as aged 30 which would mean he was born in 1871 (this would have been 5 years after the death of  James..possibly !

Baptismal records -Anna 3rd April 1853 sponsors Charles Costello and Bridget Devins
Bridget 18th April 1855 sponsors Thomas Gillon and Mathilda McGoveran
Thomas 3rd June 1857 sponsors Michael Freel and Honoria Bartley
Margaret Meighan 17th August 1861 sponsors Daniel Gilmartin and Anna Meighan
Matilda 31st December 1863 sponsors Michael Burns and Maria Foran
James 2nd September 1866 sponsors John Clancy and ann Clancy

Please look at previous postings about baptisms....  This is my brick wall, any help would be so appreciated.
And Cead -- I got your message, I just don't know how to respond.  Can't find a box or something to do so.
I have information for you and a picture of your gg aunt (??) Margaret.  You might find it interesting.

Hi,

Here is an extract from Rootschat guidance re personal messaging:

"If you are looking at a posting from someone you want to send a PM to, then go to the left of the posting, and click on the user's name (1) or the profile icon (2). This will take you to the member's profile.
At the bottom of the profile, you will see a link: Send this RootsChatter a personal message.
"

Cead will need to have made 3 posts though before you can do this.

If I have the right Pat(rick) in 1901 which Cead refers to, he is here:
Pat Meehan
You can see more by clicking on 'View census images'

By 1911, Pat has aged somewhat but still does not fit in with the baptism list

Meehan 1911

regards
heywood

Haywood,
Thank you for your help with this.  I don't know how I missed Cead's first post.  But, I have learned more.
I'd love to get in touch with Meehans in Ireland.  Hopefully I'll knock down this brick wall -- the elusive Meehans!
Thank you again  :)
