Hi Millipede
Thank you so much for all your interest and hard work. To recap your findings so far
1861 William Barfoot 1837 Littleworth Bucks and Martha Barfoot 1836 Ampthill (Lacemaker) are Lodgers with Samuel Barker 1837 Millbrook Beds (Agr Lab) wife Mary Barker 1836 (Martha’s daughter) living Millbrook Rd, Millbrook Beds.
William and Martha ages and place of birth are wrong and there is no relationship given between Martha and Mary.
This does not trouble me as In 1851 William and Martha Barfoot are both lodgers with her son Joseph there was no relationship given.
William Barfoot was born in Kilworth Leics not Littleworth Bucks. A question is that a Hamlet of Wilstead (see inventory) is Littleworth??
I searched the census and I cannot see a William Barfoot 1837+or-5 born in Littleworth Bucks on any other census.
I cannot find a marriage (other than William to Martha Balls) for William Barfoot to another Martha. The marriage in 1849 in Luton was William (which returns Martha Cartwright) was William to Sarah Day, he was William Snr’s son.
If William Barfoot was born 1837 was married to a Martha did she die before the 1861 census? I could not find a death registered for a Martha in this period.
On the plus side both the occupations for William and Martha are correct.
They are living with Martha’s daughter.
1871 Martha Barfoot (as Mary Bayfer) 1795 Boston Lincs, a widow and mother in law (Lacemaker) is living with Samuel Barker 1837 Ampthill (Lab) and Mary Barker 1836 Flitwick (her daughter) and John Barker 1868 Millbrook living Breeze Pond Pirton Herts.
Martha's age, place of birth and occupation are correct plus she is with her daughter.
Her grandson John was born in Millbrook circa 1868 so the Barker family must have moved to Herts 1868-1871.
Martha is a widow which ties in with the death reg of her husband.
William Barfoot born 1785 death reg 1868 Q1 Berkhampstead Herts.
If her daughter Mary Barker nee Balls then dies aged 37 reg 1873 Q1 Hitchin Herts and her husband Samuel remarries Elizabeth Smith reg 1873 Q3 Hitchin perhaps Martha returned to other family members in Flitwick/Ampthill and was buried there in 1876
Martha Barford born 1794 death reg 1876 Q3 Ampthill. Beds
Both death certificates would certainly prove this scenario but I may trawl the newspapers first and save some pennies!! I think perhaps I am more likely to send for William's.
