Silver WW1 Badge
« on: Tuesday 16 September 14 12:49 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone

I have just come into possession of a silver world war 1 badge.  It says around the rim:  for king and empire - services rendered.

The number on the back is 323987.

I am trying to find who it may have belonged to.  Can anyone help?

This site might help - at the end it quotes:-

The badges were individually numbered. It is possible to trace the recipient of the badge from its number using the online resource at Ancestry.

I believe I saw recently that access to  www.ancestry.co.uk  is free this coming weekend ...

How does that help others with a similar query?

The information from the badge number is available online. The poster now has the information, and it helps others from wasting their time in pointless/fruitless searches. That's how it helps. If anyone else has a badge number, as long as I have Ancestry membership, I will help. Considering the quirks of copyright on this forum, I utilised the P.M. facility rather than waste my time on openly posting it on here, only to be removed by one of the "mods". Mind you, it would have been a lot shorter than this reply. But all in the life of a day, and if it was removed, then I would have to do it again anyway.

Malky,

With the exception of the 1911 census (different copyright owner!), copyright usually only applies to the images.
And NOT the information on those images!

So, you cant post a copy of the image, and you can't copy-and-past from the image.

You can, however, type out the information - and that's (normally!) OK!

Copyright Law is a very tricky subject, and I think RC tends to err on the side of caution.
I certainly don't think they are necessarily correct, but it's just something we have to live with! ;D ;D

Hello all .I have a paper copy from Ancestry of my Grandfathers issue of a silver wound badge from the First World War.I have asked family members about it,but no one can remember it.I have a photo of him with it on his jacket lapel and was wondering if it was lost or if a collector has it.How can I find out as I have it's issue number from his record. His name was Arthur Theobald and was in the Essex Regimend. His Silver Badge issue number is B.20.302. It also shows that he Enlisted on the 28 Nov 1914 and was Discharged on the 25 Oct 1918

The Silver War Badge was issued to men who had served & invalided out for whatever reason.
They weren't a medal & therefore no ribbon was issued.
After the war had ended they became surplus to requirements & most were just thrown away.
