John Griffiths
« on: Monday 18 August 14 13:52 BST (UK) »
Help, please.  Am looking for John Griffiths born 1863 at Llanymynech, Shropshire.  Son of William Griffiths born 1836, and Mary Jones born 1841-1921
Siblings
Mary Hannah Griffiths born Llanymynech 1869, married to William Alma Aylmer Lewis 1855-1930, surgeon and JP, Oswestry
Frances Elizabeth Griffiths born Llanymynech 1870-1941, married Charles Penry Bullock 1862-1933
William - no other info except a reference in a marriage report for a niece.

In census 1891 John is working as assistant Surgeon and GP to a doctor in Scarborough, Yorkshire.  I lose him then, no reference I can find for 1901 or 1911 census records.  The next reference is in 1921 when his mother dies, Bramhall, Chesire, probate to John Griffiths, surgeon then again in 1933 when Charles Penry Bullock referes to John Griffiths, retired surgeon, in his will.

Can a keen eyed Rootschatter find John Griffiths after 1891 please??

Thank you for that Mike, and again Kay for the census information.

Have been searching for the Fourth child, sibling to Mary, Frances and John.  In 1911 census their mother Mary states 9 children born 4 living.  I believe that this fourth child was called William due to same wedding reference mentioned in connection to John.  Have searched but cannot find a marriage record relating to William Griffiths and Mary Jones (father Thomas Jones) so unsure when to start looking.  Searching under Llanymynech place of birth or Great Ness reveals little and am unfamiliar with Shropshire but believe to be within 5 towns area.

This information is not critical but would like to tie up loose ends!!  If anyone has the curiosity!

Many thanks

Just to set  the  background, is it correct that Mary was widowed by 1881 when she was living with  her father

Thank you Kay, yes those were my conclusions too.  In the prior census Mary was with her husband William who was 'out of business'.  Cannot find Mary Jones or William Griffiths on census returns before that date.

Hope this helps

Looking at Mary Jones b 1842 ish in Great Ness with father Thomas retired farmer born in 1805 Baschurch.  I can't see Mary with her father in 1851, but I wonder whether she is listed as a  pupil age 11 boarding at a small school  at Ruyton in the home of an Independant Minister of Ruyton with a few other pupils HO107 Piece 1993 Folio 37 Page 26

There is a baptism on Family Search for a Mary Jones b 1839 with parents Thomas and Hannah Jones https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NGGF-MJV

This could connect to the  Thomas Jones in 1851 b 1805 Baschurch Shropshire  Farmer of 250 acres employing 7 men living in Great Ness with wife Hannah, children and lots of servants with a nice gap for Mary Jones  HO107; Piece: 1994; Folio: 446; Page: 5

By 1861 Mary, listed as born 1840 Great Ness is back with the family and her father Thomas is a farmer of 300 acres at Wilcott, Great Ness RG 9 Piece 1885 Folio 42 Page 8

Given the obvious wealth of Mary's father it is difficult to imagine that she wouldn't have married  William.   Will keep fiddling but am off out now

William Griffiths born 1836 is listed as born in Ruyton/Royton in 1871 and this could be him and his siblings in 1861 living in Carreghofa in the Reg District of Llanfyllin where the births of Mary Hannah, Frances Elizabeth and probably John were registered.  Edit - Not that it has helped find their marriage in the short time between 1861 and 1863 when John was born but it may give help with a time frame for possible birth of a William

William Griffiths    25 b Ruyton, Salop Grocer and General Dealer
Fanny Griffiths    23 Sister b Ruyton
Jane Griffiths  17 Sister b Ruyton
Margaret Davies 23 Servant
John Roberts    13 Apprentice
