Elizabeth QUIN b 1851 to John Quin and Mary Conaughy (?)
« on: Thursday 11 July 13 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hi.

I'm trying to find the birth details for my g-g-grandmother Elizabeth Quin and confirm details for her parents.

I have her marriage record to James Edwards at Seaton Smithy on 2 October 1874 aged 23.  Her parents are listed as John Quin (deceased) and Mary maiden surname Conaughy.  One of the witnesses is also John Quin so possibly a brother.  Her usual place of residence is West Abbey Street, Arbroath.

I also have the record of her death on 28 April 1918 in the Arbroath Infirmary aged 66 with James as the informant.  Their usual residence is New Barns Smithy, Inverkeilor.  Her mother's maiden surname is shown here as Donnachie and Quin has been spelled Quinn.

As well as this I also have census transcripts for James and Elizabeth for 1881, 1891 and 1901.

If the ages on the two records are correct it suggests a birth date between April and October 1851.  There are several family trees that indicate her birth place as Dundee but I'm not certain of the basis for this.

Any assistance with locating Elizabeth's birth is appreciated.

Hi,
There is a marriage 13th August 1841 at Dundee between a John Quin and a Mary Donnohy  ???
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTVZ-S4X

Looks like this couple could be living in the same household at the time of the 1841 Census-
Princes Street Dundee

John Quin aged 25 Handloom Weaver  born Ireland
Mary Donochy aged 20 Powerloom Weaver born Ireland
The other 9 people in the household are young Irish workers (weavers/ mill workers).
Check out www.freecen.org.uk

Can't find them on 1851....yet! ;D
Wonder if these could be Elizabeth's parents?

Looby  :)

Hi again,
Interesting suggestion here - Do you think it's possible that on the 1861 Census the family had added an Mc to their name?  ???
There is an Elizabeth McQuinn aged 10 at Arbroath on this Census-
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VB7T-6TP
There is also a John McQuinn born c. 1815 and a Mary McQuinn born c.1817 (neither born in Scotland) at Arbroath too. Plus a Mary born approx 1846 , John 1854 and a William 1857.
You would need to check the original census on Scotland's People to establish if this was one family group.
Interestingly - there is a birth of a William Quinn on 12/12/1856 to a John Quinn and a Mary Donneghy at Arbroath. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYB4-12Q

Hope this is of interest/help
Good luck with your research,
Looby  :)

I agree with your suggestions Looby  :) Not unusual at that time to see the Mc added (sometimes, for Irish in Scotland/Ireland, a surname will also vary with an O').

The family that you found in 1861:

John Mcquinn 46, Flax Handloom Weaver b. Ireland
Mary Mcquin 44 b. Ireland
Mary Mcquinn 15 b. Ireland
Elizabeth Mcquinn 10 b. Dundee, Forfarshire
John Mcquinn 7 b. Dundee, Forfarshire
William Mcquinn 4 b. Arbroath, Forfarshire
Address: 12 South Grimsby, Arbroath

From what you had, I think this is 1871 with the family as Quinn. Good match with the address showing on the 1874 marriage:

Mary Quinn 55 millworker b. Ireland
Elisa Quinn 20 millworker b. Dundee
John Quinn 17 millworker b. Dundee
William Quinn 14 millworker b. Arbroath
Address: 2 Abbey St, Arbroath

Likely father John has died between censuses.

Final one on the Scottish censuses I think. Looby has a likely entry for 1841. For 1851:

John Queen 38 labourer b. Ireland
Mary Queen 36 b. Ireland.
James Queen 8 b. Dundee
Mary Queen 5 b. Dundee
Elizabeth Queen 9 Months b. Dundee
Address: 1 St Roqus Lane, Dundee

Hello All,

Taking that you have found the correct family here is some info.

1881 Census, St Vigeans, Fofar, Scotland.

Address 39 Leonard Street.

James Quinn, Head, M. age 38 years, M. born Dundee, Forfar, Scotland,
Staff Sergeant Bengal Unattached List, on 12 months leave from India,
Catherine Quinn, Wife, M. age 25 years, F. born Ireland,
Rolind Martin Quinn, son, age 10 years M. born Bengal, India,
Edith Mary Quinn, Daur, age 6 years, F. born Bengal, India,
Mary Quinn, Mother, Retired Mill Worker, W. age 64 years, F. born Ireland.

I believe this is the James Quinn, the oldest son of John Quinn, and Mary Donnachie, with his widowed mother Mary, living with him.

It also looks like James Edwards, and wife Elizabeth Quinn, are living at Seaton Cottage, St. Vigeans, Forfar, in 1881.

There is also a very good chance that the Quinn's, were Catholic, and the four older siblings James,Mary,Elizabeth, and John, were born and baptized, St. Andrews, Dundee.

Elizabeth Quin* being born 1850.

Regards,
Jonn.
