Hector and Mary (Leggat) McPhee, Johnstone, Renfrewshire 1841??
« on: Friday 11 April 14 08:34 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for more info re: my 2nd gr grandparents Hector and Mary, both b. ~1812 and both d. 1880 in Puslinch, Wellington Co, Ontario, Canada.  They are on Walkinshaw St in Johnstone in 1841 with Daniel, one of several children who died post vaccinations.  The only child to survive (no vaccination) was my gr grandfather John McPhee b. 20 Apr 1847 in Johnstone or Greenock.  Hector m. Mary 31 Dec 1834 in Paisley Abbey.  No other info known for Hector, except one of his brothers was Robert.

Mary Leggat's parents were James and Janet (McCrae) Leggat who were also on Walkinshaw St, Johnstone in 1841.  Mary's sisters were Elizabeth b. 1806, Jean b. 1808 and Janet b. 1811.

Hector & son John were both engine builders or engineers and came to Canada in 1869 with mother Mary following later that year.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Thanks,
bbeattie

I have a family genealogy for Kenneth George McPhee dated Jan 30, 1988.  It includes information about Hector McPhee and Mary Leggat and their son John McPhee and Emma Jane Dixon and children.  I would be happy to share this if you do not already have this information.  I am also trying to find out information on the parents and grandparents of Hector McPhee.

Hi rmcp (r mcphee I assume).  I am Brian Beattie in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.  Could I ask your full name and relation to the family?  I probably have most of the same family info you have but would love to compare notes!  Do you have any further info on Hector's siblings or his wife Mary Leggat's family?

Cheers,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Ron McPhee in Plainwell, Michigan.
My Grandfather was William Gilmour.
Here is an example of the narrative I have from Kenneth George McPhee 1988.
Hector MCPHEE was my great grandfather, a Scot who was reputed to be very fond of hunting and fishing.  In order to indulge in these advocations it was necessary to poach, since he was not one of the landowners.  He is also reputed to have been "a crack shot" and won so many of the local contests...  It continues with information on Mary Leggat, John and Emma and their children.
Ron

I'm still not sure of your direct family Ron...who are your parents/ McPhee grandparents?  Emma (Dixon) McPhee's grandfather was a William Gilmour.

Brian,
My father was Kenneth R. McPhee, son of William Gilmour McPhee, second child oldest son of John McPhee and Emma Jane Dixon.  Yes, I do get on Ancestry at times.
Hope this helps out.
Ron

OK great!  So Hector was your 2nd great grandfather as he is mine.  My grandfather was George McPhee, your grandfather William Gilmour's youngest brother.  George's 1st wife (my mom's mom) died young and George remarried with one son Ron McPhee. What is your ancestry.com username?  I will invite you as a guest.  My ancestry.com username is 'bbeattie51'.
