Prince Edward Street Query
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have traced my family to 66 Prince Edward street, Glasgow at around 1901 (1901 census) and up to alteast 1935 (death cert of a family member).

Having googled it, its comes up as 1 bedroom flat on modern housing websites, which would seem odd to me as the family had 6 children, the Head of the family was a Master Baker and he came from a fairly well off family.  Therefore it doesn't make sense that they would be living in such cramped conditions.

Also on this Glasgow Street Directory the family don't show until the 1914-15 issue and there are other names also at the address on the directories from 1901 up to 1914-15 as shown.

Please could anyone offer an explanation about the layout of the building?

It is the M'Calls I am interested in.

Thanks

Many streets in Glasgow were renamed and renumbered as part of a major reorganisation in the 1920's  following the acquisition of  many smaller Burgh's.

In this street what is now number 66 may not have been the same building as shown in the earlier records.

The number of names would appear to suggest a tenement building (an apartment block). Some tenements can be extremely overcrowded while others were built as more luxurious style dwellings.

Hi Tom,
Prince Edward Street is in the Strathbungo area of Glasgow and is located just to the north of the railway line at Queens Park Station.  It runs between Niddrie Road (formerly Cromwell Rd.), and Victoria Road.  As Falkyrn anticipated, the properties along the street are 4-storey red, and blonde  sandstone tenements.  No66, on the north side of the street (end nearest Niddrie Road) is blonde sandstone, with possibly 8 or more flatted dwellings taking access from the street via a single close.  (There is currently a flat for sale at this address (Ref Zoopla web site)).

The street is only shown in outline on the 1899 25" OS-plan of the area, which suggests that nothing had been constructed at that time, yet by 1910, the street and housing were fully developed ( http://maps.nls.uk/view/82892247).

Hope this is of assistance.

Regards,

Istrice

The 1901 census which you have tells you the number of rooms with a window in the flat. That will give you an idea of the size.
