WILLIAM GLASS

I am searching for info on William Glass who married Agnes Smart in 1813  in Wemyss, Fife). They emigrated to Canada where William must have died as Agnes returned pre 1841 as a widow with children first to Hobkirk, town o' Rule and then settled at Hayhope Farm, Yetholm. As I believe I may be connected to this family I would like any info re William such as date of birth, baptism and why he moved from Wemyss where he was a shepherd at Wemyss Castle. Where did he come from originally?

A mystery is that his wife Agnes had a sister Penelope who also married someone called William Glass in 1825 recorded both at Wemyss and Jedburgh. Penelope also moved down to Hobkirk and later settled in Canada with her son and family. Because Agnes and Penelope both raised children over the same period  I think there are 2 Williams and not one!

i am at a total loss with your two williams, but can i say that agnes had a child in jedburgh in 1828 and penelope had a child in 1827 in jedburgh.

william smart and margaret skinners had their banns read twice, the first was on the 30/10/1791 at markinch, fife, then on 25/11/1791 at wemyss.

william glass also had his banns read twice, first 10/7/1825 jedburgh and then 21/7/1825.

now in saying that oor wullie must have been fae jedburgh as we know that the smart family are fae wemyss.

all the children were born in wemyss except catherine who was born in jedburgh.

scottish families have a naming pattern that is easy to follow but i cannot find a william with the father called james, for we now know that agnes and penelope's father was called william.

Have you followed through on the John Glass Snr. who shows with Penelope's family on the 1841/51 (I'm wondering whether there is some connection to Penelope's husband William):

Joe, remember there are no relationships given within the household for the 1841 census.

It is strange about the two Williams Glass husbands....

Thanks Joe, for all the info you have sent. I'm esp interested to hear about the Smarts as I had very little on them. I have all the census info on the Glass family after they moved down to roxs. But I just wish I knew more about the 2 Williams!

Monica, thanks for further info. i know about John Glass ex soldier. I even found details of his army medals! I believe he is the brother of my 4xgt grandfather from Northumberland. Finding John in Roxs. put me on the trail of the Glass family from Roxs and Wemyss. You see on john's death certificate his parents are the same as my ancestors!! and further more, another brother moved from Northumberland up to Wemyss about the same time as the others moved away from Wemyss!! The mystery deepens.

I am beginning to think they all started from Wemyss in the first place....

there was a john glass married to margaret elliot who had a son william in jedburgh on the 7/12/1828.

the best i can do for the smarts is only pure guesswork, no doubt you can research them a little further.

i think william smart was born dysart in 1773 to george and catherine forgan.

george married catherine on the 1/12/1764 in dysart.

catherine forgan was born 14/11/1744 in dysart

george was born 29/7/1733 dysart and was the son of john and elizabeth elspet goodwilly.

remember this is pure guesswork.
