1842 census Chester county? (Pennsylvania)
« on: Sunday 12 October 14 14:11 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there was a census carried out in 1842 in Chester County, PA and if so how to access it?

I believe there was a James Baird in Kennett, Chester, PA (born Ireland) & I am looking confirmation for this.

I am in Ireland so wondering if there is an online version or an archive I can contact to look up for me, thanks.

The answer is no (closest possibly 1840 military pensioners census) but if you check www.familysearch or google 'pennsylvania census records' you'll get an idea of what is available- like this site (scroll down for link to Chester Co.):

It looks like the Historical Society of Pennsylvania has it:  http://discover.hsp.org/Record/hsp.opac.v01-77646  Information on getting copies:  http://hsp.org/collections/library-services/rights-and-reproductions

Also, the Family History Center has it:  https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/233655?availability=Family%20History%20Library  You may be able to request a look-up for free through their photoduplication service:  http://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

From comments I'm seeing online, that census gives limited information - the name of the taxable person, the town they live in, and occupation.
