Surname: ANCHEN ~ anyone know its' origins?
« on: Friday 29 June 07 01:48 BST (UK) »
Greetings......does anyone know about the origins of the name 'ANCHEN'..?

I have a marriage of Alexander ANCHEN and Martha Ann FORSTER......am only guessing it's London....the UK at least.

Would like confirmation of marriage and any info on the surname.

Appreciate any help......all the best, Karma.

Hi Stan.....the marr.details came from the Australian birth (Index only not certificate) in 1884 of their son. It states the parents names as above. The birth certificate has not been obtained as yet however all info leads to the parents marrying in the UK. The name has been seen in the London area.

Thanks for your interest......Karma

Chinese you say Loo!!.......had never thought of that. Actually I would be astounded if this were the case as this family are all blue-eyed blondes. Stranger things have happened of course...LOL :o

My thinking now, is that it is of French origin...could be wrong though.

Thanks alot for replying, I appreciate it.

Au Revoir!!... ;)

I wonder if it is a variation of ANCHEL? Anchel is a French spelling of AMSCHEL, which is from the Jewish AMSCHEL.

My first thought was German .... no idea why ... possibly thinking of the word Madchen (can't remember how to put the umlaut on the "a")

Re: German umlauts.  All you need is the LH Alt key on your keyboard and a series of numbers on the RH of your keyboard and you are away:
Alt 132 = ä
Alt 142 = Ä

Alt 148 = ö
Alt 153 = Ö

Alt 29   = ü
Alt 152 = Ü
And there you are!  Simple.    Graham

and if you are using a laptop:
Hi Johnnie,

most laptops have a Funktion key, usually labelled Fn and coloured blue or red, and most of the keys on the right have several descriptions on the key, some of which have the same colour as the Fn key - that's your numeric pad  ;D

Fortunately, the Fn and Alt key are next to each other (one hand) leaving your other hand free to find the "num pad" numbers.

There are a few other things which require a lot of contortions, but at least this one is fairly easy.

Or, even better:  if your main machine is a laptop, buy a normal keyboard and plug that in (when you are working at a desk or table).  This is now my standard set-up, and it does make life so-o-o  much easier.

The keyboard is almost twice the width of the laptop, but such a pleasure, not to have such cramped fingers  ;D ;D

Thanks for that Bob - I do have those written on a piece of paper hidden away somewhere .... I have the one for the UK Pounds sign too (alt + 0163) but it doesn't seem to work any more.
What do YOU think of my Anchen = German idea?
