As his mother is given as Maria Poulter on his christening and no father is mentioned, I wonder if he was illegitimate? If so, Hurdle could have been his father's name.

If you look on FamilySearch, Hurdle was quite a common name in Farnham.

Thank you, no father appears on Thomas Poulter's marriage certificate either, so it definitely fits.

Or maybe Maria married a Hurdle, thus young Thomas used that name sometimes for ease, but in later life reverted to his birth name of Poulter/Paulter.

There is a marriage of a James Hurdle and a Martha Poulter on the 30th Sept 1832 in Thames Ditton. They appear in the 1841 and 1851 census with a family including a Thomas, but he is younger than your Thomas.
