Would appreciate any help on Joseph Samuel BOYCE born abt 1855 County Down. Thats all I have birth wise but we have Joseph leaving Ireland and married Fannie GREGSON in New Zealand on the 5 July 1877. They had 2 children in NZ and the 3rd child was born in NSW in 1881. So Joseph left Ireland sometime before 1877 which would make him about 22 years old.
Appreciate a good detective

Did Joseph Samuel give his father's name when he married? Usually the father's name and occupation are declared on the marriage certificate. RosemaryJoan

Couldn't find a marriage cert. in New Zealand Rosemary. The only information about the mar. came fom his death cert. as being mar. in NZ on this day. Didn't show any parents.

No sign of his marriage in Ireland. Was Fannie Gregson from Ireland? Her surname is not so common and we might be able to trace him through her people. There a lots of Boyces living in the Parish of Tullylish, particularly in the Townland of Ballydugan. Sometimes there is a clue in the naming of their children - often after the grandfathers. Can you give us a few more clues?? RosemaryJoan

Hi Rosemary Joan:
The information we have was done by a living family member. So ?. What we have on the GREGSON side is:
Thomas GREGSON (b: abt 1816 where?)father William GREGSON mother ?)
Thomas mar. 1st wife Mary Ann McGOWAN on the 30 Aug 1850 in the Par. Ch. Magheralin Nth Ireland & children:
John b: 12 May 1851 Co Down Par. Magheralin.
William b: 11 Apr 1852 as above.
Robert b: 18 Dec 1853 "
Robert b: 25 Jan 1855 (don't know)
Fannie Frances (Femiah) b: 1 Jan 1857 County Armagh. (my wife's g/g/mother)
Mary Ann may have died at this time as Thomas married Sarah TURTLE on the 16 Apr 1858 at Ch of Ireland, Ballinderry, Co Antrim, Nth Ireland & they had a further 5 children:
Sarah Anne 22 Mar 1859 Edemballcoggol, Par of Magheralin, Co Down
Lizzie 23 jan 1861 (place ?)
William 27 Sep 1862
Thomas Edward 9 Nov 1864 Moira, Edemballcoggol, Par of Co Down
James 1869 Warringstown Co Down.

1. son born 3 Oct 1867
2.John Alfred born 6 May 1871
There's also a daughter with mother listed as Bessie Turtle (suspect this should be Sarah)

There were a lot of Boyces living in Tullylish Parish, which is close to Moira, including a Samuel and a Joseph. Could be family names
Boyce Alexander Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce David Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce James Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce John Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce John Ballynagarrick, Upper Tullylish Down
Boyce Joseph Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce Nathaniel Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce Robert Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce Samuel Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce Thomas Ballydugan Tullylish Down
Boyce William Ballydugan Tullylish Down
It's just possible that Joseph and Fannie knew each other in Ireland.
Still thinking. Rosemary Joan (nee Anderson)

I knew you were a nice person (nee Anderson) I was born in Scotland and was called after both grandfathers. That's what you get from being the last child. Mum & dad and family moved to Australia in 1954.

Here is an interesting marriage:
Joseph, son of William Boyce married Sarah Anne Leathem on 28/4/1850 (Ros Davies site) . These names are all in Ballydugan,Tullylish and the dates might be relevant.
They had two children listed after Civil registration started in 1864 but there would surely have been earlier children. It would be worth finding out the church they were married in in case you could search the church records.

Is there any census available in Ireland like is in Egland & Scotland that may show the family together. No that wouldn't help because I don't know Joseph's parents names (talking to myself)
I have included Joseph's death cert. if it is any help. Hope it comes through OK
Anderson
PS Just received you latest post. On Joseph's death cert. it mentions married in NZ but can not find a marriage for them in NZ. Maybe they didn't get married?

First complete census for Ireland is 1901. 1911 census for Co. Down is online (free):

More than likely one of these couples are Joseph Samuel BOYCE's parents. Would there be any shipping records in Ireland showing either the BOYCE family going out to NZ sometime about 1855 or onwards to say about 1870-75 as I would have thought that if it got nearer Joseph's mar. date to fannie in 1877 he would have gone to NZ on his own. I can't find any shipping records in NZ or Australia. I know they cameor my wife wouldn't be here.

www.ancestry.co.uk has records of unassisted passages to New South Wales in the years 1822 onwards. They show a couple of Joseph Boyces and a couple of F. Gregsons, but you need Pay as you Go subscription to view them. That doesn't cost much for a number of 'views'. RosemaryJoan

I feel positive that one of the names belongs to Joseph Samuel BOYCE's family but which one. I feel as if until I can find them or him alone shipping out to NZ this may say his age or parents or ?. I really don't know where to start & thanks for all the greaat links on the beautiful villages and countryside. One day we will go there. My wife's cousin (same side of the BOYCE family) is over in Ireland just now from Australia.

This is a great source of information and you can look at the surnames that you are looking for. There is a Samuel Boyce age 19 with John Boyce that you may want to take a look at. The dates are out by 10 years but they traveled to New Zealand and the ship is listed.
As I find more info, I often go back to this sight. Never give up and good luck in your search.

Hello Anderson, you said Fannie Gregson and Joseph Boyce were your wifes great grandparents. They are also my great grandparents. I have quite a bit of info on Fannie due to a book published by cousins but i know very little of Joseph Boyce and his family.
I'm hoping you may have found his background in Ireland and might share with me.
All i know is that Joseph and Fannie moved here fom New Zealand before they had my Grandma Alice. They passed away while living in Bargo NSW and are buried at Picton/Redbank cemetery.
Would appreciate anything you could share with me about Joseph.

Hello again Anderson, it's Rhonda here. I've just been re-reading through all the messages again and was wondering if you had got any further with your searches on Joseph Boyce regarding his parents and background.
