Carton family of Carna Co Donegal
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am writing in the hope that you may be able to help me locate a district(s) in Donegal.
Researching my family tree, (Carton/Cartan/Carten/Cartin) some records show a family connection to 'Carna' and 'The Rock' before moving to Derry.
We thought that they might be terms/abbreviations used locally as opposed to actual names.
Some family members believe we should be looking in the Carrigans area and others the Muff area. Me, I have no idea other than it is in Donegal.

Can you help?

Kindest regards
McAnee/McAneigh, McLaughlin, Carton/McCartney, McSorley, Ruxton, Weir/deVere, Flood, Lennon, Phibbs, Ormsby

Rock is a townland in Donegal in the Barony of Banagh, Parish of Inver, DED of Mountcharles.  There is no townland called Carna in Donegal but there are 9 which start with Carna such as Carnaghan in Inch Parish and Carnamoyle in Muff Parish.

Thank you Glensman for getting in touch.

It is all so confusing with so many Carnas. An abbreviation used obviously.

You can see the full list of "Carnas" here:  http://www.irishancestors.ie/search/townlands/index.php

Some more detail might help the search - for instance do you know when they moved?

Hi.
It's not that easy to pinpoint an actual time but I would say it was sometime between the early 1840's to late 1860's.
I am finding it very hard to find any Carton/Cartin/Carten/Cartan connections other than our own line. So I am led to believe that other family members stayed in Donegal somewhere

Griffiths Valuation also shows a placename called The Rock in the parish of Inishkeel, townland of Drumnasillagh.  I note that it records a Maurice Carolan which isn't too far away from your name.

If you haven't already seen it, there is a lot of excellent information on the Donegal Genealogy Resources website:

Don't know if it's relevant but there is a town called Carndonagh in Inishowen,Donegal which is shortened locally to Carn.
