Title: HEADSTONE INSCRIPTIONS East Wemyss & West Wemyss Cemeteries
Post by: NorrieG on Tuesday 11 January 11 13:38 GMT (UK)
Over a number of years I have photographed most of the
Headstones in these  Cemeteries
East Wemyss Cemetery2300 headstones
West Wemyss Cemetery 210 headstones

Some of the stones are back to the late 1800s

If you care to supply me only with the names of the
Husband & Wife eg.
WW 2   James  Allan       Jemima     Gordon

I will check my index and if there is a stone I will supply you
with the Inscription and a photograph of the stone if required.

The photograph is the alter area inside West Wemyss
Church, the church stands within the cemetery.

Norrie, If you could check a couple that I thought might have been buried in Dysart but lived mostly in the Wemyss.
John Thomson d? Euphemia Burt d 1886
My 96 year old aunt had told me that my g.granfather Robert Andrew Dunsmuir was buried in East Wemyss cemetery and there were a number of family names on his gravestone. Has she got the wrong graveyard?

Norrie, #31 Margaret Thomson is my direct descendant and she married Peter Patterson and died in Dunfermline in 1902. I have copies of the IGI’s of all the births you mentioned.
#1899 is my gran and grandad & #105 would have to be my g.g.aunt. Fanny Thomson.
Could I have copies of them?  I appreciate the time and effort you put in. Thanks. Pete.

Do you think the entry for Hugh Kelly could perhaps be 1980 and not 1950?

It's just that Robina's brother was named Hugh and he died aged 55 in 1980, so I'm wondering if it could be him that's buried there?

Hi Norrie
Read messages to Pete38, we seem to have the same family tree, through John Thomson and Euphemia Burt.  Im either the line from John or his brother Thomas who was married to Mary Millie. After some more research I am of the opinion that Townsend Thomson, b 19/4/1831 in Leslie, daughter of John and Euphemia  married Thomas Scott in Leslie 16/5/1853.   I think the Jane Townsend Thomson who is down as having died in Leslie 4/8/1914 may be in fact Townsend Thomson   and her son Robert who registered the death may have somehow got the names wrong.  Thomas Thomson and Mary had a daughter Janet born 21/2/1830, but I can find no mention of her getting married.
Anyway I see that some of the Thomson family have a connection with Wemyss. Could you check and see if Townsend is mentioned in any headstones.

Many Thanks Gerry

Re previous post the Thomas Thomson mentioned should read Robert Thomson, he was born in Markinch on 22/5/1807 and died 13/12/1834, can,t find anything on his wife Mary Millie.

Hi again Norrie

Do you have anything for ROBERT DRUMMOND born 1 Apr 1893 died 7 Mar 1943 at the Wemyss Memorial Hospital.  I believe he was interred at East Wemyss Cemetery three days after he died following a Colliery Accident at Wellsgreen when he sustained a fracture dislocation of his cervical spine. His wife was Janet Barrie Ritchie. He had a grown-up family, three of whom were in the services at the time

The Leven Mail reported (7 Apr 1943) from the enquiry held into his death at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court ... "16 year-old John Drummond, son of the deceased, said that he had worked at the coal face with his father as a drawer. On February 26 he was taking a tub of coal out to the haulage, when he heard a very loud noise of something falling. He heard groans coming from his father, and on going back to the coal face found him lying on the pavement and coal lying all around him. There was a large piece of coal weighing two or three cwts. by his father's head. His father was removed to hospital where he died."

There's another one ...
HELEN HERD m.s. POLLOCK wife of David Herd.  She was born 3 Jul 1872 and died at Grieve Street, Methilhill on 7 Oct 1953.  She was interred at Methilhill Cemetery.

Any HERD information you have for the cemeteries around the area would be helpful.  I'll refer the thread on to a cousin in California who's researching all the Herds in Scotland .

Thanks again Norrie

Lots to go on there.  As you say, wrong dates, but perhaps relating to someone else in my records.

The Herd/Mathieson information is certainty though!

Do you have any headstone images for the information?  I think you have my email, so if you want to send them that way, it'll save 'clogging up' the RootsChat site  :o

Thank you very much Norrie,
That was great, especially since I mistakenly gave you the year he married instead of the year he died.
I had no idea when his wife died and the additional information that his son Thomas Huntley Wood is in the same grave..
And Frances....I was not aware that they had a daughter,   just two sons..
Thanks again   a great result

Hello NorrieG

Many thanks for your reply re my ancestors Nicol/Thomson.  I've now discovered that West Wemyss Church was only built in 1890 so I presume they would have been baptised at East Wemyss Church even though most lived in Coaltown of Wemyss?

I am descended from the lady with the wonderful name of Alexandria Wilhelmina Montgomery Bell NICOL (known as Minnie) who was my great grandmother.  I already know a lot about her - her final resting place is in a Quaker burial ground Belfast, Ireland.  Her father Alexander Nicol was originally a coalminer (and his father too) so I guess were unable to afford any headstones.  Alexander later became a sub postmaster in Coaltown of Wemyss.

I'm still researching the sideways branches (siblings of Minnie and her uncles/aunts).  I'll post again if I think any could be found in your index.

Thanks again.

Any grave marker pictures for Russell family in West Wemyss? There should be a number of markers, many of which would include several family members. Also, would be interested in Nicol and Sharp families as well.

Alexander Russell  1822 - 1891    married   Janet Nicol           1822 - 1899

parents of:

George A Russell   1863 - 1908    married   Jane Cook Sharp  1852 - 1933

I understand the Russell family home was called Melanie Mill(s). I am not sure if this is a name that would mean anything outside of the family.

Thanks,
Jerry Russell

Hi Norrie, do you have any inscriptions from St Mary's Churchyard down by the coast? It's technically still in East Wemyss.

I trundled through the big cemetery looking for OSTLER/HOSTLER and MALCOLM headstones but didn't find any. I was wondering if you found any and if not in the big one maybe in St Mary's?

I didn't think they'd appreciate me going into their garden so I didn't bother. If I had seen someone I may have asked!

Thanks for those other headstones, I'll see if I have them on my tree.

While we're at it, do you have any KINNES/KINNIS/KINNESS anywhere in Fife? Other than in Markinch, I've been there.

Hello Norrie,

No doubt you get many requests from afar. I hope you may be able to help me with this one.
I am in Australia and researching information and gravesites of the Patrick family, in particular Alexander Patrick, miner from Wemyss, and his wife Elizabeth (nee Taylor, from Airdrie and also from a mining family). Both would have passed away sometime between 1892 and 1913. I am sorry, I do not have birthdates for these.
Also of interest are their sons, George, John Taylor, Alexander, Andrew Taylor, James, William, and William David Taylor, all Patricks of course, and all born between 1873 and 1892. Again, I do not have deceased dates for these.
I would be most appreciative if you could let me know of any grave information or photographs you may find for this family.
Thank You and regards.

Thanks so much Norrie, thats an exemplary response to my enquiry, and I can't tell you how grateful i am for that information. I've spent the past hour just staring at the results and taking it all in. From just one post I have information dating back to the 1700's.
My grandfather was Christopher Westie Patrick (b. 1887 d.1980), plasterer who did most of his apprenticeship in Dysart. It seems that one of the reasons he emigrated to Australia via the U.S. in 1906 may have been the loss of both his parents. He later worked on the first Parliament house in Canberra.
Did you get the older information from parish records and census data? I only ask in case i want to pursue it further, but perhaps we may be getting close to the limits of written records in any case.
Thanks again.

P.S. I only have the Dillon side of the family from Roscommon to pursue now

Hi NorrieG and Buckhind,
This is great info you've sent along.  I am trying to digest it all.  Many of the names match up with my research and I like how Steve has included occupations.  I have a question though.  In my research I have 3 more children born to James Welsh and Janet Barker: Janet b 1876 Kirkcaldy, Caroline b 1877 Leith and Christina (Christian) b 1879 Leith.  Christina was my Grand Aunt.  She emigrated to Canada in 1904 and married my Grand Uncle, Robert Gemmell, in 1906 in Guelph, Ontario.  I hope I am not wrong about this but if I am please let me know.  Also, James and Janet married 31 Dec 1868 in Buckhaven.
Thank you both for all your assistance.
All the best,
Cein

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I have -

James Buchanan d. 1879, married to Betsy Cairnie d. 1886, both died Buckhaven.
I am wondering if they may have been buried at East Wemyss cemetery? (or would anyone know which cemetery was used for Buckhaven around that time?).

I know that the family stayed in Buckhaven and that their son, James, was married (1873) in the United Presbyterian church, Buckhaven (to Betsy Thomson).

I had posted fairly recently generally on the related families but have since noticed this thread and thought it might just be relevant. Grateful for any advice available.

Norrie,

Thanks very much for your reply and this information, which has identified my grand uncle - Thomas Buchanan, who is the grandson of Betsy Cairnie. Its also I think possible that Elizabeth Buchanan (also listed above) is the cousin of Thomas.

This has been really helpful to me and I've got a much better picture of the family and their location, and also got a bit closer to tracking Betsy Cairnie!

as you can see on the 1881 census Francis was born 1849 in Oakley

Norrie,

Thanks for checking, and for offering to follow-up.  The four children mentioned did not marry: their four siblings (not mentioned) left for other counties and/or America.

There is another couple you could check for, if you have the time, although they may have died too early to be in your index.  They are James Arnott (1815-1887) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Angus) Arnott (1810-17 Jan 1876), who are the parents of the Charlotte in my original post.  They could be in either East or West Wemyss.

Appreciate all your help.  Very kind of you to spend so much time and effort assisting those of us with connections to the area.

Sincerely,

Doug

Norrie,

Again, thanks for checking.

Alexander Arnott (1838-1921) married Rachel Bousie (1841-1921) on 29 Jun 1866 in Wemyss Parish.  They had the following children: James (1867), Rachel Menzies (1871), Elizabeth Angus (1873), John (1879) and Agnes (1886).  I believe the entire family ended up in Cleish Parish, Kinross Shire, by 1881.

I feel a little deflated as I have traced both Baird families in Wemyss for many years back to the late 1660's.

Hi Annette   It bothered me that I coud not find any of your Bairds Stones
the only one I have in East Wemyss is a Mungo Baird, but

I checked the children of David & Catherine on the IGI
And looked for some of their children in the 1881 Census
And I found Catherine 1856 staying with her mother & father

David BAIRD   M   62    M   Methil, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Shoemaker
Catherine BAIRD   M   65    F   Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Wife
Mary GILLES   M   24    F   Methil, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Daur
   Occ:   Formerly Factory Worker
David GILLES       4    M   Methil, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Grandson
Robert GILLES       1    M   Methil, Fife, Scotland
   Rel:   Grandson

The intersting thing is that she had married a GILLIES

My mother was a Gilllies from Methil
Checking my tree I see that Mary Philp Baird  married Robert Gillies
He was the son of  David Gillies & Elizabeth Craig married  1855 Methil
Robert Gillies had a Brother  William Gillies  born 1861 who married
Janet Nicol Welsh in 1890 they were my Grandparents
Their Daughter Janet Welsh Gillies  born 1901 married  Andrew Gordon
My Parents.

Yes you didn’t find any headstones but you have  found a relation

Will PM you my Email

Hi Norrie
I am searching FOTHERINGHAM, KENNEDY, BRYCE and have found reference to the deaths of Janet FOTHERINGHAM, nee KENNEDY on 11 Aug 1934 and her husband John FOTHERINGHAM died 12 Oct 1936, both in East Wemyss.

Do you have these people or other FOTHERINGHAMs on your list?  A transcript of the inscription and/or a photo of the headstones would be very much appreciated.

Agnes  1876
David 1879

Hello Norrie .   Glad to come across you again after a few years.   You were a wonderful help to me in my search for Gordon ancestors in and around Buckhaven.   I have been away from my family history search for some time but hope to get back into it again now that winter is upon us.   From this forum it looks like you have been a big help to many  people.

Best of the season to you.

Hi Norrie G,

I visited East Wemyss cemetery last summer with a burial reference for my ancestors and didn't realise that I needed a map.... that cemetery is huge!  Needless to say I didn't find the plot I was searching for - Lair number Sect O number 18..

Do you have any references to McKenzie's in your records for East Wemyss (MacDuffs) cemetery:

Peter McKenzie who died Feb 1890 and his wife Janet Brown, who died May 1875.

I saw your Fairfull information in an earlier post and this was very helpful.   :)

Hi Norrie and Kirsty,

Thank you for checking your photo indexes and for the extra info.  (a massive undertaking to photograph all those M.I's)  8)

I was hoping for any extra information that an MI can provide with regard to the McKenzies, as I am stuck on my line with Peter McKenzie d 1890 and struggling to take this line further back in time.
I am the great grandaughter of Alexander Fairfull b.1868 Wemyss and Agnes McEwan/Henderson, Kirsty we must be related  :)

Hi Brian sory nothing on James Rougvie,
there is only a small part of the old Methillmill cemetery left
and a large number of the stones are lying lace down
as a weaver he may not have had a stone, there is no record
of his wife Margaret in the pre 1855 death Cd by FFH.

I am looking for the graves of my husband's GGG Grandparents:

George Henderson born 1791 in Largo, Fife, Scotland
and his wife
Catherine Laurie Henderson born 1791 in Wemyss, Buckhaven, Scotland

According to the General Index of Deaths for Scotland, Catherine (sic) Henderson was found to have died on 20th March 1855 at Temple, parish of Largo. According to her death entry, she was then aged 64, the widow of George Henderson, and the daughter of William Laurie (sic) a weaver, and Catherine Neish. She had resided 8 years in the parish of Largo, and was born in Buckhaven, Parish of Weymyss. Her children are listed as follows:-

Catherine aged 41
Peter 39
William 37
George born July and died Oct 1830
Johan 32
Thomson born Aug 1, and died Oct. 1832
George Thomson 21
James 19

Catherine died on March 20 1855 and was buried in the Burial Ground of Wemyss. The information for her death entry was given to the registrar, by her son, John Henderson.

I would appreciate it so very much if you would look at your lists to see if you know which cemetery she might be buried in and if there is a stone.

Hi Mary  sorry nothing in my Index for George & Catherine
Catherine died on March 20 1855 and was buried in the Burial Ground of Wemyss.
she would most likely been buried at
St Mary's by the Sea Churchyard, Main Street, East Wemyss
there is no listing by Mitchells pre 1855 deaths nor FFH pre 1855 Death Cd
if you know who their children married I can check that.

Thanks Norrie. Not sure if this is them, my Henry and Mgt had a son called William Brown born in 1845 who ought to be on the 1851 census if this is the right family. That William Brown married Jessie Lessels (who I think was from Abbotshall). Their son James married Euphemia Kinnaird from Dysart. Will see if I can find out more about William Brown siblings to check if this is the correct census return.

Cheers

Hello again Norrie
I've done some checking and this DOES look like the correct family as Alexander, Jeremiah and Jane were all born to Henry BROWN and Margaret DAVIDSON.  Still can't work out why William (who should be about 6 years old) isn't on the census.

Hi

Have just found your site which is excellent. I am researching the Thomson / Dryburgh / Nicol families for my family tree.

From information given on here I have been able to confirm and update information I have on my tree plus add additional information  and would be happy to exchange information with any others researching the same family.  Helen Dryburgh (1800-1862) and Thomas Nicol  (1799-1862) are my 3 x great grandparents.

Debbie, I have seen some of the photographs on here and they are superb, if I need them for my family, what information do you need? or do you already have the information to be able to send me these photographs having been asked by people in the past?

Kindest Regards

Duncan

Hi Norris,

Many thanks for replying. William Marshall's parents did not come from Fife.

He married Johan (Joan) Bannerman Laing from West Wemyss in 1916 and he went to live there.
Her parents were John Murray Laing (B1878) and Georgina Bannerman (B1863) and they lived at Main Street, West Wemyss. John Murray Laing's Father was John Laing 1838-1907 and Mother was Fanny Laing 1839-1901 also from West Wemyss maybe William is Buried with the Laings.

I have been searching for William Marshall for about 6 years and only this week found him, ie his marriage and Death records (He was my Mother's brother).
Many thanks again
Best regards
Joy

Hi Norrie

Many, many thanks, most appreciated.

I shall have a look at the Russell and Grays to see if any appear to be "mine", mind you there are rather a lot of Grays in Wemyss from 1700 onwards and I'm not entirely sure where my Robert came from.  The Russells, on the other hand, are now looking more promising .. trust the parish clark to omit the details on a 1738 baptism but I think that one will be mine based on other information and the majority of Russells in Wemyss appear to be the same family, at least for a few generations, albeit probably related to the Dysart family anyway. ;)

Hi, I wonder if you could help me find my great grandmother's grave. Her name was Martha Mathieson and she died on 25 January 1942 in High Street, Methil. Her second husband was Joe Mathieson. I'm trying to find out if she was buried in the area at her husband's request or if her family buried her in West Lothian with the rest of her family.

Thanks

Hi Norrie. Her maiden name was McLaren, first husband was George Hamilton. Her parents were William McLaren and Elizabeth Craig.

You wouldn't find Joe Mathieson (known as Mathewson at birth), as he moved down to Yorkshire with his daughter from his first marriage (Martha was wife number two) and he died down there in 1974.

I think she ended up in Fife living with some Hamilton relatives, after George died in 1936 in West Lothian. My own grandparents were living with Martha for a while in Methil before she died. If she's not in Fife, it's quite possible she's somewhere in West Lothian with her parents. That's an avenue I haven't gone down yet.

Thanks,
Iain

Her parents were William Johnston and Bridget McMahon. Her husband was Patrick Higgins. Its doubtful he will be mentioned. Im going on a hunch she used a false name of Elizabeth Higgins in order to get an abortion done and she died as a result of the operation. The story surrounding her life is contained in my thread on the West Lothian page.

Thanks for looking Norrie.

Hi Norrie - What a wonderful resource!  I just found your site and appreciate the work you do.

I will be traveling there in May from the U.S. with my mother and we are hoping to find our roots.  :)
If you have any information it would make our day.

These are my relatives that are all recorded as living/dying in Wemyss:

John Adamson (23 Aug 1815-10 Apr 1876) Married to
Margaret Briggs (abt 1815-21 May 1906).  They had 10 Children

Son of the above William Adamson (28 Oct 1840-20 Dec 1907) Married to
Agnes Innes Dewar (4 Dec 1840-21 Jun 1893)    They had 12 Children, one of which is my great-grandmother who came to the U.S.

The other line:

George Crombie (abt 1795-1860-1880) Married on 12 January 1789 to
Catherine Harrow (20 nov 1795 - 15 Aug 1860)  7 Children

Daughter of above Catherine Crombie (19 Oct 1823-10 Apr 1880)  Married to
James Morgan (abt 1824 - 6 Jun 1877) 8 children

Daughter of above Catherine Morgan (12 Nov 1847 - After 1895) Married to
John Simpson (29 Sep 1844 - June 1914) Who I have as being in Northumberland, Durham, England when he died, but he was born in Wemyss as were all of the above.

Also if anyone reading this has information on the Simpson line around Wemyss please contact me.   I've hit a dead end on John Simpson, my great-great grandfather.

Thank you so much for any information you have and see you soon  :)

Laura

Norrie

Thank You Norrie....I checked and this is all lining up with the info I have.   :D

Interesting find:  There is an "Alex" listed on the 1881 census living with Margaret Briggs (widowed by then) who is 8 yrs old.  Then he appears on the 1891 census living with Margaret's daughter Janet Adamson (46 at the time and unmarried) and he is listed as Alexander Methven.  Curious...do you have that name anywhere?  It's a mystery...just thought I'd throw that in there.
Now on to all the other treasures you unearthed...   ;D

Hi Laura,

Is this your John Simpson  -
Erected by JOHN SIMPSON in memory of CATHERINE MORGAN his wife died 2-11-1896 aged 45y
Also the above JOHN SIMPSON died 24-2-1915 aged 70y.  Also HELEN KINEALLY FINNIGAN beloved wife of ALEXANDER SIMPSON d 12-8-1943 aged 66y Also the above ALEXANDER SIMPSON d 15-4-1946 aged 66y.  Also their daughter Marjory d 24-4-1918 aged 1y 9m Also daughter HELEN K.F. ROLLO d 2-2-1991 aged 76y.

Thank You!  I'm pretty sure that is them...I have John's death as June 1914 in England, but that seemed strange to me that he would leave the area.  Alexander was my great-great uncle, brother of James Morgan Simpson who came here to the U.S. in 1904.  so glad to be finding connections and I can't thank you enough!  Like I said, we will be there in May so this is going to make it a trip of a lifetime....
And I am on ancestry so will be attaching this information.  My name on there is also laurahammie...

Thank you Weemanswife!

In your last message, Catherine Simpson (wife of Thomas Arnott) is my great grand aunt.

I didn't know about George's wife Robina so added her to my tree   :)

I'm not sure where the others tie in but will keep looking.  I will have more later if I haven't worn you out with all these names.

Thanks Norrie!

Hi Norrie

wow...you are a star. Thanks so much.

The Alexander Young (1834-1908) who erected the first stone died in 1908. I did not mention him because he drowned on The Hynde, south side at East Wemyss and I was not sure if he would be buried there. He was originally a farm worker from Scoonie, but later worked in the coal mines. His wife Betsy Rintoul was from Wemyss and the daughter of linen weavers. Alexander and his wife Betsy had 10 children, but Betsy and 3 daughters tragically all died from TB in a very short space of time.

His eldest son Alex Young (1858-1951) was my great grandfather and was a miner in the Great Michael pit. His wife Jean/Jane Adamson (1857-1939) and he had 6 children. I never knew that the eldest son Alex (1883-1941) was the organist at the church, he was originally a miner but a gifted pianist and later in life a music teacher in Edinburgh.

The James Adamson was the husband of Alex and Jane's daughter Mary.

I am a little surprised there is no stone for Alex and Jane's three children. John Young (b1891) aged 5 died in 1896 of diphtheria, William Young (b1886) died in 1917, he was a miner and then because of TB was the projectionist at the local Picture Palace at the time of his death and Jane Young (b1898) died in 1919

If its not asking too much could you check a couple of others ?

Betsy Rintoul's parents. James Rintoul (1805 - 1886) a linen weaver died in East Wemyss, as did his wife, Janet Rintoul ms McBain (1806-1884)

James Rintoul's parents were a Walter Rintoul, a linen hand loom weaver, and a Margaret ms Williamson although I do not have any date for their deaths which would be before 1855 or whether they died in East Wemyss.

Janet McBain's parents were an Alexander Bain, a stone mason and Elizabeth ms Simson from Dysart but their daughter Janet married in East Wemyss and so it's possible they may have died there.

Whether you find any more or not, I just wanted to say a real thank you for the images and what you found.

Kind Regards

Morris

Hi Norrie

Thanks

#26  The Margaret Rintoul married to David Knox is the sister of the Elizabeth Betsy Rintoul who was married to the Alexander Young (d1908) who's headstone you found. Margaret was another daughter of James Rintoul the weaver and his wife Janet McBain

The Elizabeth Thomson, who died aged 39 buried with the 4 young children who died,  was the first wife of Walter Rintoul.  Another 4 children survived that I know of.  Walter Rintoul was also a child of James Rintoul the weaver and Janet McBain, and brother to Betsy and Margaret. I have his death as 1903, not 1905. He was named after his paternal grandfather Walter who was the father of James the weaver

#1026 The Dora Rintoul mother of Elizabeth Tait was the daughter of Walter Rintoul and Elizabeth Thomson

#223 John Rintoul born circa 1803 was probably a brother of James the weaver

I am not sure where James Rintoul the weaver(d 1886)  and his wife Janet McBain (d 1884) might have been buried if not in East Wemyss. They had another son John Rintoul, a stone mason,  who died in 1894 in Anstruther, and also two small children Janet and James who I think died by 1851.

Thanks for searching and for what you have found.

Kind Regards

Morris

Hi Norrie

That's great - thank you!!
I've checked with my mum (my dad passed away Dec 2011) and she doesn't recognise inscription 10 so not sure if they are related to us.  Inscription 13 is my dad's uncle and auntie who where both siblings of my dad's mother and father (which I didn't know).  My grandfather (Forbes Welsh) is buried beside Margaret and Mary but unfortunately his name was never put on the headstone.
My great grandfather was called Peter Welsh who was the father of Forbes and john.  There was also a sister called Ina??  Not sure what her married name would have been though.
My dad spent some of his childhood in methil so i think some of the family would have been from the buckhaven area.  Have you any other information on the name Ness?
I'm seeing my mum at the weekend so hopefully will get more information then.
Many thanks

Andrea

Hi Andrea  I acessed the marriage Certificate for Forbes Welsh & Margaret Ness
and it gives

Marriage Certificate 6.8.1937 Osborne House Leven after banns Ch of Scot.
Forbes Wyles Welsh age 33 Engineer Berwery House East Wemyss
parents Forbes Welsh Stockeeper & Alison  Hutchison
Margaret Grant Ness age 38 Ironmongers Asst. Wood bank House East Wemyss
parents Peter Ness Storekeeper Colliery & Eliza Page
Witness  James D Penman & Jeannie Beveridge

this would meant that Margaret Ness died after only 4 years of Marriage

Your other GGrandfather was called Peter Ness
Inscription East Wemyss
1234.   Cherished memories of Eliza Page the dearly beloved wife of
Peter Ness d. 17.9.1949 aged 79. She was gentle, loving and kind.
Also the above Peter Ness d. 16.10.1951 aged 82. United
Peter Ness was born 24.2.1869 Falkland to William Ness & Agnes Taylor
married 2.1.1862 Markinch

10      Forbes WELSH died 31.1.1946 age 72
Wife Alison HUTCHISON died 18.8.1949 age 79
Forbes Welsh was born 11.9.1873 Wemyss parents John Welsh & Elizabeth Wyles

could this be right?

Hi Mitch and welcole to Roots web,and success on your first post

you asked

Hi Kathy  sorry there is nothing on my headstone index for Thomas & Elizabeth,

Who were their parents ? if you don't know then can access their Marriage certificate
on Scotlands People site which is a pay for view site also you will be able to access the 1901 Census. if you can supply these further names I can again check index for any headstones.

Hi Norrie

Yes that all seems correct!!  Your a superstar!!
Margaret Ness died ten days after giving birth to my dad so they were only married a short time.
Not sure if you would be able to get any further info??
Also do you have anything for the name Forbes, Gourley and Moodie (not sure if spelt with y) in west wemyss??
Many thanks again
Andrea

Post by: Rintoul Young on Thursday 22 August 13 19:59 BST (UK)
Hi Norrie

wow...you are a star.

Morris

Hi Norrie

I'm chasing Russell sidelines at the moment.  Picked up a rootsweb posting of yours from 2005 regarding Dunsire gravestones in East Wemyss cemetery.  Do you still have a photo of the following please?

385 John Russell DUNSIRE died 1.6.1968 age 68
youngest son of David & Sarah DUNSIRE
and brother of Annie Thomson DUNSIRE
died 29.5.1971 age 68

David's wife was Sarah Thomson.  His parents being Isabella Russell and Robert Dunsire who both died in 1871 but I don't think there would be a gravestone for them anyway.

Judging by various ancestry trees, there was also another son Alexander Thomson Dunsire who died about 1953 and was buried in East Wemyss.  David Dunsire died 1945.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Nicola

Many thanks for your reply Norrie.    This is a little earlier than I was looking for BUT the names tie in with my Rae family.   In the meantime I will leave the photo & do some more research into the names you have supplied.   Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Norrie

I'm looking for my great great grandfather John McIntosh, died 6 December 1919, husband of Alice Dryburgh Crichton, who died 3 December 1939. The last known residence of John before his death was in Leslie in 1911, but died in Durie St, Methil in 1919. His wife died in Methil also in 1939. I was wondering if you had any record of them being there? John was originally from Abbotshall, but I thought I'd see if he was in Methilhill, given that I have other relatives (including his daughter Isabella) who died in the Leslie/Glenrothes/Methil area and ended up in there. I can't find a specific thread for Methilhill, so I hope this is ok.

Thanks :)

Thanks for that Norrie. I've spoken to a relation and he says he has a photo of the headstone from the late 70s where the inscription above is visible. I've only ever seen a photo of it from recent times with very badly faded writing. Thanks for your help though, I guess John and Alice McIntosh were perhaps in there already with a cheap headstone marker and then they got the newer one when John Paton died in 1960.

As for the Crichton one, it could well be a connection, but I've yet to fully investigate that branch. No doubt when I do, I'll come back to you with other names! :)

Hi Norrie. Fresh from a visit to Edinburgh to Register House yesterday and I did some digging on my McIntoshs, the siblings of my Great Grandmother mentioned previously. I believe Alice H McIntosh (married to Alexander Allison) 1906 to 1971 to be in Methilmill, along with her brother David Crichton McIntosh (married to Jemima Black) 1901 to 1963. They also had a brother William McIntosh (married to Robina Smith) who died in 1950 aged 47, but I'm not sure if he's in there or not too.
