Fr. Michael Fitzsimons Collinstown area.
« on: Tuesday 13 March 12 16:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping to find a bit of local knowledge.
This is Michael Fitzsimons he was an Oblate Father, he had a sister Mary Nolan her son also became a priest.
I'm trying to find Michael and Mary on the Census and think this might be them http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Westmeath/Delvin/Killadoughran/881108/
but as I don't have an age for either of them or know what age Michael became a priest I can't be sure.
Priests often feature in local histories so I'm hoping someone might be able to comfirm if this is him in the 1911 Census, or give me a push in the right direction, also if this photo was taken in the Collinstown area? (Can't help but wonder who those women are)

Michael and Mary were my Grandmothers cousins so if I have the right Census return I have one of my Grand Uncle's names which would be cool.

Hi Sinann, if this website is correct http://www.oblates.ie/assets/components/omi/images/necrology07dd.pdf
it would seem that your Michael was born in Meath in 1896 and died in London on 12 April 1963.

there is also this website, which you may already have found
http://www.dioceseofleeds.org.uk/d_news/fullstory.php?newsid=780

There is another photo of Fr Michael here http://oblates.ie/across_a_century.pdf

I know this is not really helping you with your quest to find Mary & Michael in the 1901/1911 census, but it would appear they also had a brother Patrick.

Thanks Dazey999 I've seen those 3 sites and the Meath bit did bother me, I'm keeping that on hold for the moment, until I check out the Westmeath idea a bit more,(I was given the impression from family that he was from Westmeath but that could be wrong) but I must of missed something where did you find the Patrick reference please.

I should look for a birth on familysearch using that Meath date, that would make sense, why didn't I think of that sooner I can't do it from work.

There are 2 possible 1896 births - both in Westmeath
April-Jun Delvin and Jul-Sep Mullingar
Here's the link re brother ("Patsy") http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=13&p=surnames.fitzsimons

Mmmm very interesting I need to read more of that thread, thanks for the link. I do wonder if the Patsy was in fact Michael's uncle, my Great Grandfather was a very talented capenter and know to be a grump, he inherited the home place as far as I can work out but that was in Cummerstown. I think I need to have a chat with Ann.

Those two births are interesting, I did wonder if the Meath ref was incorrect on the Oblates site.
Thanks very much.

Sinann,  The Fitzsimons family which you wish to trace appears in the 1911 census. Go to Westmeath, Fore  East, Gleniidan and its entry no 37.Mary does not appear on the list as she was living with a cousin Rose Gibney,NT outside Tullamore on census night.
Best wishes
fitzan

Hello Fitzan and welcome to Rootschat, I've got a lot on the Fitzsimons since that post, I even made contact with Mary's grand daughter.
Fr. Michael and Mary turned out to be my grandmother's second cousins, their fathers are both called Patrick, and in turn their fathers Michael and Patrick were brothers.
Just going by your name are you researching Fitzsimons from the general Collinstown area?
If I can help let me know.
Thank you for your input.
