Elizabeth McArthur - Co Tyrone
« on: Sunday 08 December 13 09:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi

One of my ancestors moved to New Zealand. She married in New Zealand on 23 January 1865.

She listed her birthplace as Co Tyrone, Ireland

Her name is Elizabeth McArthur or Elizabeth Jane McArthur born around 1847

We dont have her parents names, confirmation of her birthplace or any other information about her before she moved to New Zealand nor do we have the baot she arrived in New Zealand on or the exact date.

Ive looked at the Griffiths Valuation and found other McArthurs in Tyrone and a valuation which mentions an Eliza McArthur in 1858. There are also other McArthurs there although they dont seem to be living together.

I couldnt find anything for anyone born around that date on Findmypast - (thats not to say its not there with some other spelling variant!)

On Irishgenealogy.ie in the church records if I remove the tyrone filter there are a number of Elizabeth McArthurs in Belfast or variants of the name but I cant find if they are linked to the Co Tyrone person

Any help greatly appreciated

Hi,
I am afraid that Civil Registration of births did not start until 1864 in Ireland. To find the parents you would need to know much more accurately where the child was born, parish at least but townland would be better still. You would also need to know the religion. With this information it may be possible to find the church baptism,

My mistake thinking Co Tyrone was a small place! We have next to no information about Elizabeth so Im not sure how I would find out her religion.

Does her death certificate give any family details? parents, birthplace, etc.
She was fairly young when she arrived in New Zealand- did she arrive with a relative or friend? tracking their origin might lead to her family or at least an area.
What about children- any of their documentation reveal anything about her?

Hi

Im ordering her death certificate now. Hopefully Ive got the right record as it was a relatively common name in New Zealand.

Her daughters birth certificate mentions the mothers birthplace as County Tyrone, Ireland and her age in 1877 was 30.

Hi

Ive got next to nothing from her marriage certificate. She married 23 Jan 1865 at the house of William Urqhart in George St, Dunedin, New Zealand. She wasnt full age and was 18 when she married.

Ive also applied for the death certificate - hopefully it has more information

Well sadly no..very little information again.

No mother or father listed. The certificate only says the Fathers surname is McArthur.

It says Elizabeth Jane Franklin has been in New Zealand for 62 years (she died in 1920). IN this certificate they list her as being born in Glasgow Scotland!

So which one to believe? Co Tyrone or Glasgow? Wouldn't the name indicate Glasgow?

Why do you think the name indicates Glasgow? Most surnames in Ulster can be found in both Ireland and Scotland.

It's possible she was born in Ireland but raised in Glasgow (so informant thought she was born in Scotland) or that she told her family that the McArthurs were 'Scottish from the North of Ireland' so the story got muddled...
