Where do I put me?
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 02:32 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I have files for all the families in my tree and have at last catalogued everyone but I have one query.

Do I file ME with my Mother's Fathers family line.

Or do I put me with my Dad's Scottish ancestors? We do not know the identity of my Father's Dad.
This seems so silly but I am sure there must be a rule somewhere.
Any help appreciate.

That all depends on your filing system.
How have you filed the children of marriages in earlier generations?

The only rule is you follow the system you use otherwise it makes no sense
Cheers

Hello Guy,

In all the family files I have placed the Father, his wife then the children and their children.
You see my Father was brought up thinking his sister was his mother.  No one had any idea that this was the case till years after he died.
So I guess you are telling me that I should stay with the Sinclairs line.

I notice that you are in Wakefield. This is just a bit of trivia but my Husband's family connected with the Wakefields in 1854 and upon doing the research I find they were a very mixed lot. Not very nice at all.
My son even has Wakefield as one of his names.

I truly find the placing of folk very hard.  Someone marries and it is impossible to connect all the
various people without starting lots of files.
You can see I am hopeless.  But you have made it easy - I will go with my Scottish ancestors and put me and my family in together.
Many thanks for answering my post.
Regards,  Annette

I have me located in my mother's tree and also in my father's tree - 'cos I belong on both sides - mine and my siblings children are on my father's tree because they came into the family when Mum married and changed her name.

When I married I started a tree for my husband's family and all my kids are recorded there.

Oh - and all my trees are private, so I can add living people!  ;)

Tricky isn't it.

Thankyou Wiggy.

I have 7 A4 files containing each family listed in our trees.  I thought I had found the best system and yet I still cannot find somebody at the click of a finger.

I know I should list them all on the computer but being able to take a file and  browse through it at leisure and handle the special pieces of info connected to the person is comforting.
I am getting too old to go computer completely.

Maybe one day it will all fall into place.
Many thanks, Annette
