And 1851, with likely wife Ann having died:

John Blackburn 72, wright
Isabell Blackburn 30
John Kirkwood 19

Address: Factory Close, Lochwinnoch

...and checking SP, he looks to have died just before the start of official registration  :-\

Monica just looked up Alexanders death cert 1861. Both parents deceased. John Blackburn "Wright" - I didn't know what that was but now you have written it above -wright!
So I'm thinking this IS the right family.
But - the informant on the cert was a James Blackburn brother!   ???  He isn't George is he?

And then how on earth does Margaret fit in - so much older! A daughter or an Aunt

A wright can also be called a carpenter or joiner (www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm)

From the children showing to John Blackburn and Ann Wallace on IGI:

1. MARY BLACKBURN Birth: 19 MAY 1799 - submitted entry
2. MARGARET BLACKBURN Christening: 12 JAN 1800 - actual extract
3. JOHN BLACKBURN Christening: 09 AUG 1801 - actual extract
4. JAMES BLACKBURN  Christening: 03 APR 1803 - actual extract
5. ELIZABETH BLACKBURN Christening: 06 JAN 1805 - actual extract
6. JEAN BLACKBURN Birth: 08 JAN 1808 - submitted entry
7. ANN BLACKBURN  Birth: About 1812 - submitted entry
8. ISOBEL BLACKBURN About 1814 - submitted entry
9. WILLIAM BLACKBURN Birth: About 1816 - submitted entry
10. ALEXANDER BLACKBURN Christening: 24 DEC 1818 - actual extract
11. GEORGE BLACKBURN Christening: 29 OCT 1820 - actual extracts

As a rule of thumb, if a mother started early enough having children, a 15 to 20 yr range for births was quite normal ( :'(!)

Monica when I first started looking into the John Blackburns and Ann Wallaces I thought I must be dealing with about 3 couples with the same name as the births were ranging from 1777-1796. Hence my confusion. But what I think you may be telling me is that this is one enormous family and that James on the death cert was actually 15 years older than Alex..... Yes?

Thanks for the info about the word Wright and the occupation site I better go and check it out!

Also how do you tell the difference between an actual and a submitted entry? I'll go and see if I can figure that one out!

Cheers Shaza

If you click on an IGI entry, you will see on the record page at the bottom under 'messages' either:

Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available. Ancestral File may list the same family and the submitter (or similar words), or

Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.

This then lets you know what you are looking at in respect of source of the info :)

Hi Shaza:

I have read your posts regarding Margaret Blackburn with great interest.  My great grandmother was Jean McMillan, nee Blackburn, and was a sister to your Margaret Blackburn. Jean was born in Loch Winnoch on March 3, 1851 and immigrated to Victoria, BC Canada in 1912 with her daughter, my grandmother, Helen McMillan.  I have a fairly complete list of Jean McMillan's descendants, and only a little information about her ancestors.  I would be very interested in getting your information and making a connection. I am located in Vancouver, Canada.
