I believe you have to pay the £3.30.

This is the NA link to merchant navy WW1 medals - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/merchant-seamen-medals-ww1.htm

If he was in the army the index card would point to the actual roll which sometimes gives further information, such as battalion. However the NA appear to be saying that the mercantile card is all there is.

A sample is available on a link which has ret'd for returned. IE the medals could not be delivered and were returned to the Mercantile Marine Office. If you get any abbreviations you do not understand come back.

The link under Related Guidance gives further information if the man was also in a naval reserve. section 4 covers WW1.

A little bit different for Merchant Navy though.

The medal card has no real information that will aid your research. The only piece worth anything for research purposes would be if there is a Discharge No on the card. This will be found opposite his surname and below that will be an RS2 or ID card number.

Edit* I have found his Dis A. number 520623 - He was a Fireman in the MMR (Mercantile Marine Reserve) not much in the way of records survive for these men. Possibly worth enquiring with the Fleet Air Arm Museum who hold some records for the reserve forces during WW1 but like I say MMR records are scarce. http://www.fleetairarm.com/naval-aviation-research.aspx

Thanks for all your help. I will look into your suggestions.  :)

Interestingly I found a merchant seaman record for his father on findmypast. I wonder if more details might be available for him? Although possibly unlikely as we are looking at much earlier records.p

I will  get and  post information below see what you think, as to whether there is anywhere else I could look for any more details.
