Thomas Blackburn [1858-1909] - what is his uniform?
« on: Wednesday 15 October 14 09:34 BST (UK) »
Someone has sent me this photograph of their ancestor Thomas Blackburn

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calderdalecompanion/pbn7.jpg

Can anyone identify the uniform / the regiment?

Surname interests:

Huntingdon: Bull / Shelford
Rotherham: Andrews / Steel
Easingwold: Snowball / Potter

To narrow down the possibilities:

The sword (and possible spur visible on right heel) suggests cavalry
The number of braid stripes and cuff design should narrow down the search.
The tunic and trousers seem to be different shades (or colours?)
The collar insignia is too blurred to identify.

My feeling is either hussars or yeomanry.  To find pictures for every regiment around the 1880s would take some time, but as a possibility I think the Warwickshire Yeomanry is a good match.

Hope this helps
Philip

Thanks for the response.  The hussars or cavalry possibilities are interesting.

It may be significant that the man was born in 1858 and spent much of his life in Brighouse, West Riding of Yorkshire, until he left in 1897 to move to the Cheshire/Lancashire area.  You can see what I know about him at

There doesn't seem to be a Warwickshire link.

Possibly 13th Hussars, the white collar suggests rank of private. Hopefully John 915 reads this. he is very knowledgeable on Cavalry/Hussars/ yeomanry.
