My mystery soldier
« on: Tuesday 21 October 14 02:22 BST (UK) »
That thumping sound you hear is me whacking my head on a brick wall. Again :P :P

My gggrandmother was Jane Cartmel from Liverpool. She married William Henry Addison of Saint John, New Brunswick. I have been trying to find her parentage for some years now but didn't have more than a PR transcript.

Today I found the PR image. It says:
November 14 1814. Jane. John & Rosa Cartmel. Bath St. Soldier.

Well, I cannot find any other mention, anywhere, of John and Rosa. I have no idea of his age, or birthplace. And no idea what kind of "soldier" he might have been. Bath St is right near the Liverpool docks and sailor would be a more reasonable occupation. But it says soldier.

Any ideas where I might find this guy? I've been through the resource pages and found nothing in the ones I tried. Grateful for any clues!

Cheers,
China

For the purists like myself Cartmel is a village in Lancashire so John has not travelled too far from the name's origination.

Yes, and there seems to be a large pocket of them in Garstang.

I noticed that there was a John Cartmel marriage at St Peter's (same church) on 17 January 1814 to a Mary Mc Conka (?). He was a shoemaker.

There seem to have been very few Cartmels in Liverpool at that time, and the timing is right, so I am wondering if this is "John & Rosa"

A shoemaker would be a very useful person to the army.

So...he could be a shoemaker at his wedding and a soldier at the birth of his child?

I guess Mary is a good candidate to be Rosa as names seem to have been rather flexible back then.

No way of checking any military records then? Thanks for the suggestions so far :)

Or maybe "soldier" was a mistranscribed "shoemaker".

Where did you find the PR image (the one on Ancestry looks to be a transcript) ?

Is it the one with "Cartwell " deleted, as transcribed by LAN-OPC ?

I can't find any military records for a John Cartmel in that era.

Hi Shaun, it is the one on Ancestry and there is an image below. It's pretty clearly Soldier.

There are a couple so other shoemakers on the page and one other soldier.

Well, if there isn't any way to find a soldier in a Lancashire regiment that far back, I suppose I'll just let it go. Thanks for everybody's help :)

Good evening,

He could have been in almost any regt China, need to find out which regt's may have been stationed in that area at that time.

They would have had their recruiting teams out almost daily to make up the numbers regardless of where they were from originally. At that time they would have been numbered regt's of the line but with county affiliations.
