Sister Elizabeth m. William Shackfield Newton - not the one who is all over Google as going to Australia, but a younger man b. Wales who was a medical practitioner.  Did her brother-in-law encourage Mabel's studies, I wonder?

Mabel Hardie was my Great Aunt one of 10 children I have information about her background and a couple of stories...FOUND THIS BY ACCIDENT AS I  GOOGLED HER  FATHER....I would love to know more about her....contact me.....don't know how she died....her imprisonment was never discussed in the family though she was known for tying herself to Parliament railings and not paying her rates

This recent event may be of interest - related to her WWI service in field hospitals (treating the french as she wasn't allowed to work in British hospitals)
