Great Brickhill - James Peppiatt
« on: Friday 28 February 14 11:40 GMT (UK) »
My wife has a convict ancestor - James Peppiatt.  The few records she has been able to find so far indicate he was from Great Brickhill.  He was a 24 yr old bricklayer , transported for larceny to Van Diemen's land in  about 1834.  His trial was in Aylesbury.
How would she go about finding records of his parents and siblings?  Also any records of james prior to his crime (eg where did he work, was he married...)
An unsubstantiated  family story was that he worked at Woburn Abbey at some point.
Any clues gratefully received.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat :)

So that Rootschatters don't duplicate work already done by your wife, can you tell us what records she has found and all the information available in those records?

Is there an indication of the date of the Aylesbury trial (as opposed to the 1834 transportation - there was often a significant gap between conviction and transportation)? Was he 24 at the date of conviction or at the date of transportation?

OK, she doesn't have much, but....
Firstly he was transported to VDL on the Asia 2 in 1827.  (The 1834 date I mentioned before was his completion of sentence date.)
The conviction was for Larceny - sentence 7 yrs   - in 1827, Aylesbury Assizes.
Age was 24 at transportation in 1827. Protestant.
That's about all she has I'm afraid (apart from brown hair, blue eyes, scars on hands, height 5'3 3/4", flattened nose!)

This old thread may be of interest - it may be worth your getting in touch with Rootschat member Tazzie regarding records of Peppiatts in Great Brickhill:
